SUMMARY:Inheritance | Art Exhibition at The Model
DESCRIPTION:Marcus Coates / Miriam de Búrca / Susan Hiller / Anna Maria Maiolino / Cornelia Parker / Kathy Prendergast / Selvagem – Cycle of Studies \nCurated by Emer McGarry \nInheritance brings together a constellation of artworks that confront the legacies that shape our present moment\, and ask how we can create a better future for humanity. In the mid-2020s\, we live in the aftermath of a devastating pandemic\, amid widening social polarisation\, the threat of climate collapse\, and growing geopolitical instability. \nIn this unsettled landscape\, we are compelled to reckon with how we have arrived at this point. Inheritance traces the tension between loss and recovery\, destruction and resilience\, and the long shadows of empire\, colonialism\, and ecological damage. Yet\, the works in this exhibition do not dwell on what has been lost. They insist that we have agency in shaping what is remembered\, restored\, and carried forward. \nInheritance poses the question: how can we be better ancestors for generations to come? The selected artists answer with gestures of reclamation\, action and care – from aligning with natural rhythms and Indigenous knowledge to reviving acts of resistance and imagining new futures. \nThe exhibition spans installation\, film\, drawing\, and sculpture\, with works by Marcus Coates\, Miriam de Búrca\, Susan Hiller\, Anna Maria Maiolino\, Kathy Prendergast\, Cornelia Parker\, and the collaborative research project Selvagem – Cycle of Studies. Each proposes different strategies for navigating what we inherit and what we pass on. \nKathy Prendergast’s The End and the Beginning\, 1996\, offers an intimate meditation on continuity\, made from three generations of human hair – her mother’s\, her own\, and her son’s – wound around a wooden spool\, normally used for thread. Fragile yet enduring\, it reminds us that inheritance is not only cultural and political but deeply personal. Anna Maria Maiolino’s A Story\, 2010/2024\, stages a dialogue between the artist and a distant ancestor\, searching for hope in a world scarred by violence and ecological collapse\, affirming imagination and connection as vital tools for survival. \nSusan Hiller’s Lost and Found\, 2016\, traces the echoes of once vibrant cultures by giving voice to extinct and endangered languages. Yet many of the languages we hear in this work have been revived – a quiet but profound reminder that acts of listening and care can actively shape a more rich and plural future. Cornelia Parker’s THE FUTURE (Sixes and Sevens)\, 2023\, brings the voices of children into the conversation. In this two-screen installation\, primary school children imagine their futures\, sharing their hopes and expectations. \nIf Hiller gives voice to the disappearing past\, Parker foregrounds those who will inherit what comes next\, forming a dialogue across time – the voices of the past and the voices of the future – both urging us to listen and to consider what we ourselves will pass on. \nMiriam de Búrca’s work challenges systems of power inherited from the colonial past. Using the ornate glass painting technique of verre églomisé\, once prized by wealthy elites\, to gild acts of protest into luminous images. In reframing what could be dismissed as vandalism\, de Búrca transforms resistance into a gesture of resilience. \nOther artists guide us toward more-than-human perspectives. Marcus Coates’ Nature Calendar\, 2022\, lists seasonal events according to the rhythms of plants and animals\, recalling older ways of attuning to natural cycles. \nSelvagem’s The Feral and the Sphere\, 2022\, proposes new epistemologies grounded in Indigenous knowledge and ecological care\, imagining futures that resist extractive systems and affirm interdependence. \nTogether\, these powerful works ask us not only what legacies have brought us here\, but what we choose to carry forward. They suggest that acts of attention\, care\, and imagination can reshape the future and reenchant the world.

SUMMARY:Atlantic Light
DESCRIPTION:The western edge of Ireland has long had a powerful pull on the artistic imagination — a place where geography\, memory\, and national identity converge. Atlantic Light brings together works by artists who have turned their attention to this enduring terrain\, offering not only views of place but reflections on how the West has been seen\, shaped\, and symbolised over time. \nThe 19th century landscapes of James Arthur O’Connor’s (1792-1841) offer some of the earliest artistic responses to the western seaboard\, rendered with the dramatic sensibility of the sublime. His paintings present the West as wild\, elemental\, and timeless — qualities that would become foundational to later representations. \nIn the early 20th century\, the spare\, iconic views of Achill\, Donegal and Connemara presented by Paul Henry (1877-1958) helped define a visual identity for the nascent Irish state. His stylised clouds\, white cottages\, and rugged mountains captured a purified vision of rural life — shaped by soft Atlantic light. Maurice MacGonigal (1900-1979)\, working in a more realist mode\, brought social and political consciousness to the landscape\, depicting not only scenery but the people and tensions it held. \nFew artists wrestled more intensely with the symbolic and emotional charge of the West than Jack Butler Yeats (1871-1957). For Yeats\, the western landscape was never a passive backdrop — it was a space in which the dramas of memory\, identity\, and mortality played out. His early watercolours\, drawn from childhood recollections of Sligo\, later gave way to expressionistic oils in which form dissolves into feeling but the terrain is always unmistakeably Sligo. \nBy mid-century\, artists were beginning to engage with the West in less representational\, more formal and philosophical terms. Mainie Jellett’s (1897-1944) abstraction brought rhythm\, spirituality and structure to landscape and place; while the visceral\, materially rich paintings of  Barrie Cooke (1931-2014) responded to the organic vitality of bogs\, weather systems\, and riverbeds — attuned to natural cycles and ecological change. \nSeán McSweeney (1935-2018) brought a deeply personal and intuitive approach to the western landscape in the later 20th and early 21st centuries. Based for many years in Ballyconnell\, County Sligo\, his paintings respond closely to the rhythms and atmospheres of the surrounding coastline\, boglands\, and waterways. His work captures the mutable\, weathered quality of the western landscape — a place shaped by light\, wind\, and the resonance of water and land. \nThe artists in this exhibition present the West of Ireland as a subject that has continually shifted in meaning across time\, artistic practice\, and cultural context. Atlantic Light reflects on this evolving visual tradition\, tracing the ways in which artists have responded to the western landscape as both a real and imagined place\, offering new perspectives on how the land continues to inform questions of identity\, history\, and creative expression in Irish art. \n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\nImage credits: Seán McSweeney (1935-2018)\, In Memory of John Ruddock\, c. 1982\, oil on canvas. SUMMARY:Mairead O’hEocha; Solo Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Mairead O’hEocha; Solo Exhibition \nTue. 8 Jul. – Sat. 20 Sep. 2025\nOpening Sat. 5 Jul. \nCurated by Michael Hill \nMairead O’hEocha’s recent paintings cast an array of extraordinary and everyday tabletop scenes: birds invading a garden lunch; an octopus in a trophy room; a fake loaf of bread at the tenement museum. Tables float in and out from the facts and furnishings of their surrounds. The artist’s new works consolidate a variety of recurring themes: how to depict ‘the natural world’ and our relationship with it\, sensory encounters\, and digital space. \nThe exhibition will span four galleries in The Model\, and include several new large-scale oil paintings. A small number of recent works from international exhibitions will add to this overview of the artist’s practice. The selection will specifically incorporate scenes of display\, from museum dioramas to arranged flower bouquets\, referring to a cabinet of curiosities or salon d’automne. \nArtist Biography\nMairead O’hEocha’s solo exhibitions include P420\, Bologna (2023); mother’s tankstation London (2023\, 2018); Temple Bar Gallery + Studios\, Dublin (2020); mother’s tankstation Dublin (2016\, 2012); The Douglas Hyde Gallery\, Dublin (2014\, 2011)\, Butler Gallery\, Kilkenny (2011). \nHer work has been represented in a number of international group exhibitions and publications that have explored contemporary painting practices\, including Slow Painting (curated by Gilly Fox and Martin Herbert)\, Hayward Gallery Touring Programme\, UK (2019-2020)\, 6th Biennial of Painting HDLU\, Zagreb (2021)\, Salzberger Kunstverein (2017)\, and Vitamin P3: New Perspectives in Painting (published by Phaidon\, 2016). Other important group exhibitions include Irish Museum of Modern Art\, Dublin; National Gallery of Ireland; The Glucksman; Cork; Broad Art Museum\, Michigan. \nO’hEocha’s work is included in the collections of Irish Museum of Modern Art\, National Gallery of Ireland\, Hugh Lane Gallery\, Trinity College Dublin\, Arts Council of Ireland\, Office of Public Works\, AMC Collezione Coppola. \nRecent residencies and awards include Moly-Sabata / Fondation Albert Gleizes\, Sablons (2025); Arts Council of Ireland Project Award (2024); Internationale Künstlerhaus Villa Concordia\, Bamberg (2024); Cité internationale des arts\, Paris (2023); BigCi\, Sydney (2016). \nwww.maireadoheocha.com \nMichael Hill is Programme Curator at Temple Bar Gallery + Studios\, Dublin\, and one half of the curatorial team that represented Ireland at the 59th Venice Biennale 2022\, and Irish Tour 2023. SUMMARY:Marianne Keating; No Irish Need Apply
DESCRIPTION:Sat. 19 Apr. – Sat. 21 Jun. 2025 \nThe Model is delighted to present a new film work by the artist\, Marianne Keating\, entitled No Irish Need Apply\, which has been commissioned by The Model especially for The Niland Collection. This single-channel film examines the realities of Irish migration to England during the twentieth century. \nThe Irish experience in Britain during the 1970s and 1980s was profoundly shaped by the political violence of the Troubles\, and the resulting anti-Irish sentiment that was widespread within the British government and media. This period saw an entire Irish immigrant community\, many of whom had settled in post-war Britain to build lives and contribute to society\, targeted by restrictive legislation\, denied social welfare benefits\, and subjected to discrimination. \nWhen British rule in southern Ireland ended in 1922\, the lack of a robust industrial base created an unsustainable economic situation\, forcing thousands of Irish citizens to seek new employment opportunities in Britain. The designation of the “special relationship” between the Republic of Ireland and the United Kingdom\, allowed free movement of Irish citizens to the UK\, but was in itself a remnant of the colonial era. This arrangement\, while seemingly beneficial for Irish migrants\, also served colonial interests. British Cabinet Papers from 1955 reveal that maintaining the flow of Irish labour was necessary to support the continued development of the UK economy. \nBy the late 1970s\, the Irish formed the largest immigrant community in London. The escalation of the war in Northern Ireland and the IRA bombing campaign in mainland Britain led to increased tensions for the Irish community\, and the Brent Irish Advisory Service (BIAS) was established in 1978\, followed in 1981 by Irish in Britain Representation Group (IBRG)\, to support their welfare needs. \nThe Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) was rushed through British Parliament in 1974 following the Guildford and Birmingham pub bombings. This act granted sweeping powers to law enforcement\, and was often used to target innocent Irish individuals. Under this legislation\, Irish people were subjected to arbitrary arrests\, extended detentions without charge\, and exclusion from Britain without legal recourse. Such measures facilitated mass surveillance and reinforced stereotypes that cast suspicion on the entire Irish community. Everyday life became fraught with fear as Irish accents alone could provoke verbal abuse\, physical assault\, or even denial of service in shops and workplaces. \nThis systemic prejudice extended beyond public policy into social attitudes. Irish-owned businesses and homes were targeted with violence\, and many people avoided Irish Centres and pubs out of fear of victimisation. The quashing of the convictions of the Guildford Four in 1990 and the Birmingham Six in 1991 finally exposed the injustices faced by the Irish in Britain\, forcing a reckoning with the oppressive policies and prejudice that had silenced a vibrant community for decades. These revelations marked a turning point in reclaiming dignity and challenging anti-Irish racism. \nMarianne Keating is an Irish artist and researcher\, based in London. She has a practice-based PhD in Visual & Material Culture and Contemporary Art Practice entitled\, ‘They don’t do much in the cane-hole way’\, Hidden Histories of the Irish Diaspora in Jamaica\, from Kingston University\, London. She is currently an Associate Lecturer at the Royal College of Art\, London. Keating was shortlisted to represent Ireland at the 2022 Venice Biennial and has exhibited extensively throughout Ireland and internationally. In 2023\, Keating’s new work An Ciúnas / The Silence was exhibited at the Showroom Gallery in London\, and in 2024\, it toured to selected venues in Ireland. Upcoming exhibitions and new commissions in 2025 include a newly commissioned multi-screen work for The Irish Pavilion\, at the World Expo\, Japan; and a solo show at The Royal Hibernian Academy\, Dublin. \nNo Irish Need Apply has been made possible through an Arts Council Bursary Award. It has been acquired by the Graeve Collection\, which is on long-term loan to the Niland Collection. \nThe exhibition continues until Sat. 21 Jun. 2025

SUMMARY:Julianknxx; Chorus in Rememory of Flight
DESCRIPTION:Tue. 15 Apr. – Sat. 21 Jun. 2025 \n12 – 3pm | Exhibition Preview\n3 – 4pm | Julianknxx in conversation with writer and creative producer\, Debo Amon\n4 – 5pm | Drinks Reception \nThe Model is delighted to present Chorus in Rememory of Flight\, an immersive multi-screen film installation\, across six gallery spaces\, by one of the UK’s most exciting artists\, Julianknxx. \nInspired by the words of philosopher Édouard Glissant\, ‘you can change with the Other while being yourself\, you are not one\, you are multiple\, and you are yourself’; this major work is borne out of a year in which Julianknxx travelled to cities across Europe to locate and collaborate with ex-patriot African communities. Through a practice of active listening\, he has collected the performances and testimonies of singers\, poets\, choirs\, politicians\, dancers\, activists and leading figures from Black communities\, to create a series of films that reflect on the chorus as a means of resistance to the eradication of difference. \nFilmed in Hamburg\, Berlin\, Amsterdam\, Rotterdam\, Antwerp\, London\, Marseille\, Barcelona and Lisbon\, the project charts a staggering 4000 kilometres in total. These vast distances offer a reflection on the many miles traversed by those interviewed and by their ancestors throughout history. A single refrain – ‘we are what’s left of us’ – binds the choral voices together\, speaking to the ways in which music can be a vital conduit for the survival of cultural memory. \nJulianknxx’s films encourage new perspectives on what it means to be caught between multiple histories and places\, offering up the choir as a metaphor for community. Culminating in an area for reading and reflection\, the exhibition emphasises the importance of listening and engaging in alternative ways of telling the stories that have shaped our cultural identities. The polyphonic nature of Julianknxx’s work is indicative of the artist’s expansive practice\, which is rooted in poetry but extends into performance\, film\, music and sculpture. Born in Freetown\, Sierra Leone\, he draws on his personal experiences to broaden perspectives on the history and culture of Africa and its diasporas. \nIn casting his own practice as a ‘living archive’ or a ‘history from below’\, Julianknxx draws on West African traditions of oral history to reframe how we construct both local and global perspectives. He does this through a body of work that challenges fixed ideas of identity and unravels linear Western historical and socio-political narratives\, attempting to reconcile how it feels to exist primarily in liminal spaces. \nJulianknxx has exhibited widely in the UK and internationally\, including solo exhibitions at CAM\, Lisbon\, 2025; the Barbican\, London\, 2023; Foley Gallery\, New York\, 2022; and 180\, The Strand\, London\, 2021. His work has been shown in group exhibitions at Tate Modern\, the Whitechapel Gallery\, and the Gagosian amongst many other galleries. \nImages\nImage credits: Julianknxx; Chorus in Rememory of Flight\, installation view\, Barbican Art Gallery (c) Eva Herzog & Barbican Art Gallery.

SUMMARY:Jack Butler Yeats; The Dreaming Road
DESCRIPTION:Tue. 25 Mar. – Sat. 1 Nov. 2025 \nThe Dreaming Road presents audiences with the opportunity to trace Jack Butler Yeats’ extraordinary journey as an artist through four important\, interconnected stages of his life and work. The show touches on the legacy of his unique artistic family\, as well as the indelible influence of his early life in Sligo on his entire career. A selection of his politically charged paintings of the 1920s are on view alongside a number of the great masterpieces of his later years\, which are noted for their wildly romantic and expressionistic style. While Jack was notably reluctant to discuss his creative practice\, the exhibition is augmented with a number of statements by the artist himself that shed light on aspects of his attitudes and approaches to painting. \nThe Yeats Family was one of the most creative and accomplished in the literary and cultural world of early twentieth century Ireland. Patriarch\, John Butler Yeats was distinguished as an artist\, and particularly noted for his work in portraiture. Jack’s three siblings William\, Susan\, Elizabeth made significant contributions to literature\, publishing and education throughout their lifetimes. Their mother\, Susan Pollexfen\, was the daughter of a wealthy Sligo merchant family\, and imbued in her children a deep love for the people\, landscape\, and mythology of the county. \nJack Butler Yeats remains one of Ireland’s best loved and most accomplished artists. Unlike his siblings\, Jack was sent to his maternal grandparents in Sligo\, where he lived between the ages of eight and 16 years. He cut his creative teeth on the deep experience of Irish life he encountered in the town\, and its western characters and dramatic landscape populated his works until the end of his life. While his subject matter remained the same throughout his long career\, his style of painting\, and the meaning he gave his works changed over time. His initial depictions of western life was marked by a strong sentimentality\, which he expressed in watercolours during the period 1898–1910. This gave way\, in his early oil period (1910–1925)\, to the pronounced realism that he developed to make political and social commentary. \nJack had been on a visit back to Sligo in 1898\, when he witnessed some of the centenary re-enactments of the 1798 Rebellion. The spectacle of the event appealed to Jack’s love of the drama of everyday life\, and he was inspired to create one of his first political scenes\, Robert Emmet – Procession at Carricknagat\, Co. Sligo\, 1898. The more serious concern of Ireland’s nationhood that the centenary celebrations brought to the fore\, also impacted the young artist. From 1898 onwards he became more convinced of the right to Irish self-determination. He went on to paint several\, more overtly political works\, some of which are also on view in this exhibition\, culminating in the masterworks The Funeral of Harry Boland\, 1922\, and Communicating with Prisoners\, c. 1924. \nFrom the 1920s and into the later part of his career\, another more marked development took hold. Jack’s subject matter became imbued with a deeper mysticism and symbolism. His handling of paint became much freer\, he abandoned his palette and brush\, and worked directly onto the canvas using only the primary colours. Throughout the 1940s\, his paintings increasingly present us with apocalyptic visions. He developed a highly personal technique\, which placed less emphasis on composition. He focused more on creating work in a ‘stream-of-consciousness’ style and termed the paintings he made in this way as ‘happenings’. \nThe exhibition continues until 1st November. In depth Curator’s Tours will run on each Saturday at 11am throughout June\, July and August\, and can be booked at the front desk or at www.themodel.ie. \nWe keep all of our exhibitions free of charge and open to everyone. We kindly ask that those who can afford to\, make a donation of €5 for this exhibition. This can be done by contactless payment at the station in this gallery. \nImage credits: John Butler Yeats\, W.B. Yeats reading in the garden\, Bedford Park\, c. 1888–89\, oil on canvas. SUMMARY:Christine Mackey: Seeking to walk beautifully on the earth
DESCRIPTION:Earth’s skin is not one soil but many soils. Each has its own story. Soils are active. They are born. They age. They breathe. Soils are in a state of constant change in cycles with no beginning and no end. We are the custodians of this living organism\, earth’s green mantle. \nThis opening statement by the artist Christine Mackey sets the stage for her solo exhibition\, Seeking to walk beautifully on the earth\, which opens at The Model on Sat. 1 February. \nMackey’s artistic practice is one of profound stewardship\, observation and care for the environment\, and is deeply rooted in site-specific land and marine-based work. Seasonal processes range from collecting seeds\, to weaving floating islands\, to nourishing native tree saplings\, to the cultivation of waste ground. \nSeeking to walk beautifully on the earth is accompanied by a unique series of mini residencies undertaken by invited multi-disciplinary artists whose work resonates with Mackey’s practice. Each artist-in-residence will present free workshops over six weeks throughout February and March\, offering members of the public and invited groups the opportunity to explore a range of concepts and techniques from mycology\, world-building\, weaving\, making dyes and pigments\, to story-telling and illustration. \nMackey’s exhibition is particularly relevant today\, as it resonates with urgent issues of biodiversity loss\, species extinction\, energy crises\, and habitat destruction\, while at the same time highlighting positive themes of renewal\, awareness\, and change. \nThe works are assembled as a series of chapters rooted in key locations. Huddle began as a public seed planting exercise in Wexford to explore the habitat of native bees. It looks at the way in which wild pollinators are under threat from pollution and adverse changes to the climate. Auction is an experimental docu-style video that documents Mackey’s residency at a kelp farm in South Korea. This work visualizes the implications of industrial-scale seaweed farming on the local marine environment and on migratory communities. This experience prompted Mackey to develop several large-scale hybrid drawings of aquatic plants that are sewn in sections utilizing a Korean technique to make wrapping cloth from waste material. \nBoils\, Bitters\, and Scores is a unique artist’s book that reflects Mackey’s long-term engagement with biological narratives\, where the distinct voice of each plant is conveyed through their words and realized in their pigments. \nThe variable materials and processes used in this exhibition activate new ideas related to site\, agency and ecology which opens a myriad of conversation on the fragility of earths systems. \nWorkshops with the invited artists can be booked here. The exhibition continues until 22 March.
