SUMMARY:Jack Butler Yeats; The Living Ginger
DESCRIPTION:Jack Butler Yeats; The Living Ginger\nFri. 6 Mar. – Sun. 27 Sep. 2026\nPlease note\, that the exhibition The Living Ginger will be temporarily closed on Friday morning\, 22nd May\, until 2.30pm.\nJack B. Yeats used the phrase “the living ginger” to describe the vital spark he believed a great painting must contain — an inner charge that animates the image beyond mere description. For Yeats\, this energy was not simply visual; it was emotional\, psychological and imaginative. It was the pulse of lived experience. \nAcross a career spanning more than seventy years\, Yeats sought out figures who embodied this vitality. Performers\, sailors\, children at play and solitary figures — characters drawn from memory and from his early life in Sligo — recur throughout his work. Rarely settled within social settings\, they often stand alone\, absorbed in their own worlds\, heightening a sense of introspection and distance. \nYeats worked primarily in watercolour between 1898 and 1910 before turning decisively to oils. Many of his central concerns first take shape during this formative period and re-emerge with renewed intensity in the later paintings. The solitary figure emerges early as a powerful device\, a means of concentrating feeling and staging inner drama. Even at this stage\, themes of displacement and heightened atmosphere are evident. A clear continuity runs between these early works and the celebrated late oils of the 1940s and 1950s. Yeats repeatedly revisited the imagery of his youth\, allowing memory to reshape and intensify earlier motifs. Simple figures reappear decades later\, transformed by colour and gesture. Their energy ignites the surface of the canvas\, while their vulnerability opens onto something universal. \nIn these characters\, Yeats was not documenting social types. He was searching for that essential spark — the living ginger. \nImage: Jack Butler Yeats; The Crest of the Hill\, 1904\, watercolour.

SUMMARY:Jack Butler Yeats; A Painted Universe
DESCRIPTION:Jack Butler Yeats; A Painted Universe\nSat. 15 Nov. – Sun. 27 Sep. 2026\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJack Butler Yeats (1871–1957) is one of Ireland’s most celebrated twentieth-century artists. The Niland Collection\, housed at The Model\, holds an extensive body of his work spanning the full arc of his career – from early pen-and-ink illustrations and lively watercolours\, to the expressive oil paintings that define his mature style. \nYeats belonged to one of Ireland’s most remarkable artistic families. His father\, John Butler Yeats (1839–1922)\, was a portrait painter\, while his siblings – William Butler Yeats (1865–1939)\, Susan Mary Yeats (1866–1949) and Elizabeth Corbet Yeats (1868–1940) – were all distinguished figures in literature\, art and publishing. Unlike them\, Jack spent his childhood in Sligo with his maternal grandparents\, Elizabeth and William Pollexfen. The vivid life of the town and its people left a deep and lasting impression on him. From an early age\, he was captivated by the colour and drama of everyday life – a fascination that became the foundation of his art. \nThroughout his career\, Yeats returned to the people and scenes of his youth – the sailor\, the clown\, the traveller and the balladeer\, amongst others. Over time\, these subjects came to embody universal human experience in his work. His shift to oil painting from 1910 onwards marked a turning point. The early oils\, grounded in realism\, depict ordinary lives and the social and political world of early twentieth-century Ireland. From the mid-1920s\, however\, his art grew increasingly expressive and symbolic\, as the paint itself became a means to convey emotion and transcendence. \nIn his later works – charged with pathos and intensity – familiar figures take on a metaphysical dimension\, revealing Yeats’s lifelong quest to paint not only the world he saw\, but the inner universe he felt. A Painted Universe invites visitors to encounter these presences and step into Yeats’s artistic world\, where memory\, emotion and experience are transformed into colour\, form and light.

SUMMARY:The Last Five Years
DESCRIPTION:What if you could watch a relationship from both ends at once? The Last Five Years charts the highs\, lows\, and crossed wires of a couple navigating love alongside individual dreams. Cathy tells her story from the break-up backwards\, Jamie from the first spark forwards — and somewhere in the middle\, their timelines meet. \nIt’s funny\, tender\, and painfully honest: the everyday mix-ups that snowball into poor choices\, the thrill of ambition\, and the way success for one and failure for the other quietly erode what once felt unshakable. \nStarring Karen Gordon as Cathy\, bringing warmth\, wit\, and emotional precision to a modern musical gem about the cost of chasing dreams and the truths we don’t want to face\, alongside Warren McCook as Jamie\, whose performance captures the drive\, optimism\, and unraveling journey of a man chasing success and love in parallel. \nWritten and composed by\nJASON ROBERT BROWN \nDirected by Kieran Griffiths\nMusical Direction by Niamh Crowley\nStarring Karen Gordon\, Warren McCook \nOriginally Produced for the New York stage by Arielle Tepper and Marty Bell\nOriginally Produced by Northlight Theatre\, Chicago\, USA\nPerformed by arrangement with Music Theatre International

SUMMARY:Cairde Opening Festival Club with Select
DESCRIPTION:Sat. 4 Jul. 2026\, 11.30pm\nAdmission Free\nTo celebrate the opening of Cairde Sligo Arts Festival and following Phil Collins’ durational film event they shoot horses\, Cairde and The Model are delighted to present Select. \nSelect is a Sligo based\, grassroots collective and club night pushing underground dance music on Ireland’s west coast made up of notjack and etrah. The pair have spent the past seven years building an independent party series that’s helped redefine & promote Sligo’s nightlife and music scene. \nSince its inception in 2018 Select has grown into a trusted name for high-energy\, no-frills dancefloors. Their sound moves fluidly across UK garage\, 2-step\, house\, techno and breaks\, with Notjack and Etrah’s B2B sets at the core\, restless\, bass-driven and dialled in. \nOperating across everything from DIY spaces to established venues\, Select has carved out a reputation for consistently delivering proper parties with a clear sense of identity. Their bookings reflect that same ethos: a considered mix of emerging and established talent\, spanning both Irish and international scenes. Past guests include Shampain\, Surka\, Derv\, SHEE\, Prozak\, Osmosis Jones and DJ Swisha\, alongside a strong commitment to platforming local artists. \nCommunity sits at the centre of what they do. Select parties draw from grassroots club culture\, fostering inclusive\, open dance floors without compromising on musical quality. It’s a philosophy that’s earned them a loyal following and a recognition as a key club night operating outside Ireland’s main urban centres. \n\nAll events taking place in The Model on Sat 04 July – they shoot horses\, associated events and opening festival club – are free to attend. \nThere is a suggested donation of €10 with proceeds going to Medical Aid for Palestinians.
