SUMMARY:Mairead O’hEocha; Solo Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Mairead O’hEocha; Solo Exhibition \nTue. 8 Jul. – Sat. 20 Sep. 2025\nOpening Sat. 5 Jul. \nCurated by Michael Hill \nMairead O’hEocha’s recent paintings cast an array of extraordinary and everyday tabletop scenes: birds invading a garden lunch; an octopus in a trophy room; a fake loaf of bread at the tenement museum. Tables float in and out from the facts and furnishings of their surrounds. The artist’s new works consolidate a variety of recurring themes: how to depict ‘the natural world’ and our relationship with it\, sensory encounters\, and digital space. \nThe exhibition will span four galleries in The Model\, and include several new large-scale oil paintings. A small number of recent works from international exhibitions will add to this overview of the artist’s practice. The selection will specifically incorporate scenes of display\, from museum dioramas to arranged flower bouquets\, referring to a cabinet of curiosities or salon d’automne. \nArtist Biography\nMairead O’hEocha’s solo exhibitions include P420\, Bologna (2023); mother’s tankstation London (2023\, 2018); Temple Bar Gallery + Studios\, Dublin (2020); mother’s tankstation Dublin (2016\, 2012); The Douglas Hyde Gallery\, Dublin (2014\, 2011)\, Butler Gallery\, Kilkenny (2011). \nHer work has been represented in a number of international group exhibitions and publications that have explored contemporary painting practices\, including Slow Painting (curated by Gilly Fox and Martin Herbert)\, Hayward Gallery Touring Programme\, UK (2019-2020)\, 6th Biennial of Painting HDLU\, Zagreb (2021)\, Salzberger Kunstverein (2017)\, and Vitamin P3: New Perspectives in Painting (published by Phaidon\, 2016). Other important group exhibitions include Irish Museum of Modern Art\, Dublin; National Gallery of Ireland; The Glucksman; Cork; Broad Art Museum\, Michigan. \nO’hEocha’s work is included in the collections of Irish Museum of Modern Art\, National Gallery of Ireland\, Hugh Lane Gallery\, Trinity College Dublin\, Arts Council of Ireland\, Office of Public Works\, AMC Collezione Coppola. \nRecent residencies and awards include Moly-Sabata / Fondation Albert Gleizes\, Sablons (2025); Arts Council of Ireland Project Award (2024); Internationale Künstlerhaus Villa Concordia\, Bamberg (2024); Cité internationale des arts\, Paris (2023); BigCi\, Sydney (2016). \nwww.maireadoheocha.com \nMichael Hill is Programme Curator at Temple Bar Gallery + Studios\, Dublin\, and one half of the curatorial team that represented Ireland at the 59th Venice Biennale 2022\, and Irish Tour 2023. He is former Curator and Curatorial Assistant at The Douglas Hyde Gallery\, Dublin; and his independent curatorial projects include Weatherproof\, Chicago; Dada Post\, Berlin; and Pallas Projects\, Dublin. \nwww.100yrsagotoday.com

SUMMARY:Rub Off The Dark - Presents Josephine Foster Plus Special Guests Perlee
DESCRIPTION:Josephine Foster is a singer-songwriter-composer whose voice seems to drift from another time. She has lent her warbling mezzo-soprano and interpretive wit to nearly two decades of self-produced recordings. Her songs are rooted in early American folk-blues as well as classical art song and Tin Pan Alley. She has crafted a singular body of work. Her music carries the soul of old folk songs\, operatic hymns\, and blues\, yet moves freely\, like a dream half-remembered. Born in the Mountain West\, she sang in a log cabin church as a girl before setting out on the road\, through Chicago’s back rooms to Spanish countryside villages and in and out of Nashville\, she has shaped a body of song that mirrors her wandering heart. Playing guitar\, piano/organ\, harp\, or autoharp\, Foster moves effortlessly between structure and spontaneity. Her performances feel both intimate and otherworldly\, drawing listeners into a world uniquely her own. A poet and visual artist as well as musician\, her playful ink pieces expand upon lyrical themes of her songs. \n‘A dreamily unique talent’ – The Guardian \nSupport from Perlee:\n‘Perlee are one of the country’s most singular talents.’ – The Thin Air \nPerlee are Cormac O’Keeffe and Saramai Leech. They are from County Meath\, Ireland\, and met through the musical scene in their town. They were in other bands before they began to collaborate and work as a duo. After almost a decade in Berlin they are currently based in Sligo. \nPerlee’s music ebbs and flows between dream pop and slow core in the vein of the Cocteau Twins\, Low and Beach House. So far they have released 2 E.P.s & an L.P. to excellent critical reception and radio play across Germany\, Ireland\, the U.S. and more. The couple\, who originally met through the DIY scene in their hometown of Navan\, formed Perlee whilst living in a small house in the farmer’s quarters of a large stately home\, surrounded by huge trees\, peacocks and farm dogs. The house was so remote that they were able to spend their evenings playing loud music late into the night. In 2018\, the pair moved to Berlin and quickly found a small flat in an old industrial part of Berlin called Moabit. They had the good fortune\, through friends\, of finding a rehearsal space on the grounds of an old hospital around the corner and began developing the sound they had first struck upon while living in the remote Irish countryside. In the early days\, the couple enjoyed the many spaces the city provided in which to showcase their music. They played hundreds of shows; in smoky bars\, house concerts and clubs until the pandemic hit. Their debut album Speaking From Other Rooms was released in April 2023 to rave reviews and sold out shows. In 2024 Perlee went into the studio to record their next record and after relocating to Ireland from Berlin\, they are currently mixing this sophomore album in Sligo.

SUMMARY:Josephine Foster
DESCRIPTION:Abhainn Studio & October Nights are thrilled to welcome the acclaimed US singer Josephine Foster to Enniscrone\, as part of an Irish tour. \nJosephine Foster (b. 1974) is a North American artist celebrated as a singer\, multi-instrumentalist\, and composer. Her voice seems to drift from another time. Her music carries the soul of old folk songs\, operatic hymns\, and blues\, yet moves freely\, like a dream half-remembered. \nBorn in Colorado\, she sang in a log cabin church as a girl before setting out on the road\, collecting songs and stories along the way. In her twenties\, Foster immersed herself in Chicago’s experimental rock and free jazz scene\, shedding remnants of her early operatic ambitions. A transatlantic move followed\, leading her to rural Spain\, where she spent over a decade honing her craft. \nLater\, stints in Nashville’s recording studios further shaped her prolific career\, resulting in a rich tapestry of solo and band albums. Whether on stage or in the studio\, she has shaped a body of song that mirrors her wandering heart—restless\, soulful\, and unbound. \nPlaying guitar\, piano/organ\, harp\, and autoharp\, Foster moves effortlessly between structure and spontaneity. Her performances feel both intimate and otherworldly\, drawing listeners into a world uniquely her own. \nPress \n‘Domestic Sphere’ album review 9/10 ALBUM OF THE WEEK Loud & Quiet \n“You could be forgiven for thinking that Josephine Foster’s quavering\, sepia-tinted voice is something beamed in from another age. It conjures up images of an older southern woman\, sitting on the porch of a clapboard shack in the years before the civil war\, absent-mindedly singing ancient folksongs”. The Guardian \n‘Her old-timey aesthetic and vocal style hovers somewhere between opera and folk\, earthy and ethereal. SUMMARY:Polyphonic Summer | Mike Absolum at Abhainn Gallery Enniscrone
DESCRIPTION:Abhainn Gallery Enniscrone Co. Sligo is pleased to present “Polyphonic summer”. An exhibition of paintings and prints by Mike Absolum spanning two decades\, curated by Ann Conmy. The Exhibition opens 6th June and runs until the 19th July. Wine Reception on Friday the 6th June at 6pm\, all are welcome. \nBorn in 1940\, Mike Absalom remembers a Messerschmitt 109 strafing the seafront at Torquay during World War II. That image of airborne menace would later echo in his theatrical performances\, where he detonated stage pyrotechnics while performing as a folk singer across Ireland and the UK in the 1970s. At Trinity College Dublin\, he recalls the old ceiling shaking loose into clouds of black dust—a literal crumbling of order that delighted him. \nA scholar of Arabic at Oxford\, a folk singer-songwriter\, harpist\, poet\, puppeteer\, and painter\, Absalom has long moved between worlds.\nIt wasn’t until later in life\, after relocating from British Columbia to Mayo\, that he discovered through genealogical research that he was half Irish. His relationship to place\, home and becoming are central themes in this body of work. \nAbsalom’s painted compositions are vibrant\, rhythmic\, and full of motion -where things are made and unmade with absurdist logic. The paintings use non naturalistic hues to communicate and extract character and emotion. The panoptic view\, often spinning\, invites the audience into a visual polyphony\, where stories of connection and disconnection reveal and critique the hero’s journey. \nThe nude portraits reveal much about the characters of the female sitters and their relationships to the artist through expressions of both indifference and vulnerability. The male and female gaze meet each other in “Blue woman” and neither one relents. \nA parade of cow’s buttocks displayed centrally to the viewer is hallmark Absolom. Sheets blowing furiously on the clothesline\, an artist who has a reverence for ordinary details however unflattering. \nHis lino cuts and dry point etchings present scenes balancing somewhere between the chaotic and mythic divine. Carved lines are strong imposing gestures seamless and fluid in the way they deal with image making. The ontology of the haunted is present often; in the two characters staring out towards Whitby pier seemingly forever. In the collision of animals mythic and real\,with humans. There is a clawing back of the undergrowth\, a return to the pre-verbal: a visionary clash with the shadow as it is acknowledged. \nThe scene of Dugort\, Achill\, Mayo with rolling waves and the black overbearing summit to Slievemore\, captures a quality of animus in this etched depiction. As with much of his work\, everything pulses with life\, memory and motion. \nAt the centre of Polyphonic Summer is a meditation:\nAre memories central to identity? \nImages come together of land and body\, stories are gleaned through these paintings and etchings. the past and present can exist in both places which acts as a totem of belonging. \nMike has shown his work extensively in Ireland England\, Wales\, Northern Ireland\, also in China. \nWords by Ann Conmy

Exhibition times as follows: \n\nMonday 12th May 10:00am – 5:00pm\nTuesday 13th May: 9:00am – 5:00pm\nWednesday 14th May: 9:00am – 5:00pm\nThursday 15th May: Private viewing: 9:00am – 2:00pm/ Open viewing: 2:00pm – 5:00pm\n\nThe award-winning Red Dress has 87 panels embroidered over 14 years by 380 people in 51 countries\, including Ireland. Artist\, Kirstie McLeod initially sought to unite people globally across borders and boundaries with the concept. However\, as it evolved\, The Red Dress became a platform for self-expression and an opportunity for marginalised voices to be amplified\, and prompting conversations on important and frequently uncomfortable issues: a perfect match for the outcomes of Sligo PEACEPLUS Co-designed Local Community Peace Action Plan. \nThe Sligo PEACEPLUS Action Plan was developed in co-design consultation. It is made up of 15 projects across three themes that seek to enhance community integration and cohesion. PEACEPLUS\, a programme managed by the Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB) has awarded funding\, of €3.604 Million has been awarded to support the Plan which implements a diverse range of projects that address local challenges and promote peace and prosperity across County Sligo and with cross-border participation from now until the end of summer 2028. \nThe projects which will span the entire county will use activities\, including sports\, art\, podcasting\, technology\, history\, music\, fashion\, biodiversity and the circular economy\, to involve communities marginalised by geography\, race\, ability\, gender\, sexuality\, religion\, age\, disadvantage\, and having conflict legacy. It is in this way\, exhibiting the Red Dress speaks to participation and what can be achieved over time when groups come together. The exhibit will be supplemented by a local project to decorate a calico cloak for Sligo PEACEPLUS. \nFor more information on the Red Dress for Sligo PEACEPLUS and the various projects that people can get involved in\, check out www.sligococo.ie /peace or email peace@sligococo.ie . \n\nThe Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB) is a North South Body with the statutory remit for managing EU funding programmes within Northern Ireland and the border counties of Ireland.\nPEACEPLUS is a cross-border funding Programme designed to support peace and prosperity across Northern Ireland and the border counties of Ireland. The total value of PEACEPLUS is €1.14 billion.\nPEACEPLUS is co-funded by the European Union\, the Government of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland\, the Government of Ireland\, and the Northern Ireland Executive.\nFor more information on the artist and the Red Dress Project\, please visit https://reddressembroidery.com/

SUMMARY:Seven Letters
DESCRIPTION:Seven Letters is a heartfelt tribute to the everyday women who navigate life carrying the weight of memories on their hearts. These women have faced love\, abandonment\, hope\, and heartbreak\, yet they persist\, often finding strength through wit and laughter. The play poignantly reminds us that while our youth slips away too quickly\, the passage of time can sometimes feel interminable.

SUMMARY:Marianne Keating; No Irish Need Apply
DESCRIPTION:Sat. 19 Apr. – Sat. 21 Jun. 2025 \nThe Model is delighted to present a new film work by the artist\, Marianne Keating\, entitled No Irish Need Apply\, which has been commissioned by The Model especially for The Niland Collection. This single-channel film examines the realities of Irish migration to England during the twentieth century. \nThe Irish experience in Britain during the 1970s and 1980s was profoundly shaped by the political violence of the Troubles\, and the resulting anti-Irish sentiment that was widespread within the British government and media. This period saw an entire Irish immigrant community\, many of whom had settled in post-war Britain to build lives and contribute to society\, targeted by restrictive legislation\, denied social welfare benefits\, and subjected to discrimination. \nWhen British rule in southern Ireland ended in 1922\, the lack of a robust industrial base created an unsustainable economic situation\, forcing thousands of Irish citizens to seek new employment opportunities in Britain. The designation of the “special relationship” between the Republic of Ireland and the United Kingdom\, allowed free movement of Irish citizens to the UK\, but was in itself a remnant of the colonial era. This arrangement\, while seemingly beneficial for Irish migrants\, also served colonial interests. British Cabinet Papers from 1955 reveal that maintaining the flow of Irish labour was necessary to support the continued development of the UK economy. \nBy the late 1970s\, the Irish formed the largest immigrant community in London. The escalation of the war in Northern Ireland and the IRA bombing campaign in mainland Britain led to increased tensions for the Irish community\, and the Brent Irish Advisory Service (BIAS) was established in 1978\, followed in 1981 by Irish in Britain Representation Group (IBRG)\, to support their welfare needs. \nThe Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) was rushed through British Parliament in 1974 following the Guildford and Birmingham pub bombings. This act granted sweeping powers to law enforcement\, and was often used to target innocent Irish individuals. Under this legislation\, Irish people were subjected to arbitrary arrests\, extended detentions without charge\, and exclusion from Britain without legal recourse. Such measures facilitated mass surveillance and reinforced stereotypes that cast suspicion on the entire Irish community. Everyday life became fraught with fear as Irish accents alone could provoke verbal abuse\, physical assault\, or even denial of service in shops and workplaces. \nThis systemic prejudice extended beyond public policy into social attitudes. Irish-owned businesses and homes were targeted with violence\, and many people avoided Irish Centres and pubs out of fear of victimisation. The quashing of the convictions of the Guildford Four in 1990 and the Birmingham Six in 1991 finally exposed the injustices faced by the Irish in Britain\, forcing a reckoning with the oppressive policies and prejudice that had silenced a vibrant community for decades. These revelations marked a turning point in reclaiming dignity and challenging anti-Irish racism. \nMarianne Keating is an Irish artist and researcher\, based in London. She has a practice-based PhD in Visual & Material Culture and Contemporary Art Practice entitled\, ‘They don’t do much in the cane-hole way’\, Hidden Histories of the Irish Diaspora in Jamaica\, from Kingston University\, London. She is currently an Associate Lecturer at the Royal College of Art\, London. Keating was shortlisted to represent Ireland at the 2022 Venice Biennial and has exhibited extensively throughout Ireland and internationally. In 2023\, Keating’s new work An Ciúnas / The Silence was exhibited at the Showroom Gallery in London\, and in 2024\, it toured to selected venues in Ireland. Upcoming exhibitions and new commissions in 2025 include a newly commissioned multi-screen work for The Irish Pavilion\, at the World Expo\, Japan; and a solo show at The Royal Hibernian Academy\, Dublin. \nNo Irish Need Apply has been made possible through an Arts Council Bursary Award. It has been acquired by the Graeve Collection\, which is on long-term loan to the Niland Collection. \nThe exhibition continues until Sat. 21 Jun. 2025

SUMMARY:Julianknxx; Chorus in Rememory of Flight
DESCRIPTION:Tue. 15 Apr. – Sat. 21 Jun. 2025 \n12 – 3pm | Exhibition Preview\n3 – 4pm | Julianknxx in conversation with writer and creative producer\, Debo Amon\n4 – 5pm | Drinks Reception \nThe Model is delighted to present Chorus in Rememory of Flight\, an immersive multi-screen film installation\, across six gallery spaces\, by one of the UK’s most exciting artists\, Julianknxx. \nInspired by the words of philosopher Édouard Glissant\, ‘you can change with the Other while being yourself\, you are not one\, you are multiple\, and you are yourself’; this major work is borne out of a year in which Julianknxx travelled to cities across Europe to locate and collaborate with ex-patriot African communities. Through a practice of active listening\, he has collected the performances and testimonies of singers\, poets\, choirs\, politicians\, dancers\, activists and leading figures from Black communities\, to create a series of films that reflect on the chorus as a means of resistance to the eradication of difference. \nFilmed in Hamburg\, Berlin\, Amsterdam\, Rotterdam\, Antwerp\, London\, Marseille\, Barcelona and Lisbon\, the project charts a staggering 4000 kilometres in total. These vast distances offer a reflection on the many miles traversed by those interviewed and by their ancestors throughout history. A single refrain – ‘we are what’s left of us’ – binds the choral voices together\, speaking to the ways in which music can be a vital conduit for the survival of cultural memory. \nJulianknxx’s films encourage new perspectives on what it means to be caught between multiple histories and places\, offering up the choir as a metaphor for community. Culminating in an area for reading and reflection\, the exhibition emphasises the importance of listening and engaging in alternative ways of telling the stories that have shaped our cultural identities. The polyphonic nature of Julianknxx’s work is indicative of the artist’s expansive practice\, which is rooted in poetry but extends into performance\, film\, music and sculpture. Born in Freetown\, Sierra Leone\, he draws on his personal experiences to broaden perspectives on the history and culture of Africa and its diasporas. \nIn casting his own practice as a ‘living archive’ or a ‘history from below’\, Julianknxx draws on West African traditions of oral history to reframe how we construct both local and global perspectives. He does this through a body of work that challenges fixed ideas of identity and unravels linear Western historical and socio-political narratives\, attempting to reconcile how it feels to exist primarily in liminal spaces. \nJulianknxx has exhibited widely in the UK and internationally\, including solo exhibitions at CAM\, Lisbon\, 2025; the Barbican\, London\, 2023; Foley Gallery\, New York\, 2022; and 180\, The Strand\, London\, 2021. His work has been shown in group exhibitions at Tate Modern\, the Whitechapel Gallery\, and the Gagosian amongst many other galleries. \nImages\nImage credits: Julianknxx; Chorus in Rememory of Flight\, installation view\, Barbican Art Gallery (c) Eva Herzog & Barbican Art Gallery.

SUMMARY:An Evening of Music by Ryuichi Sakamoto Curated and performed by Ruth McGinley
DESCRIPTION:“Art is long… Life is short” \nAN EVENING OF MUSIC BY RYUICHI SAKAMOTO CURATED AND PERFORMED BY RUTH MCGINLEY. \nComposer\, pianist\, record producer\, and actor Ryuichi Sakamoto is perhaps best known for the score of the 1983 movie Merry Christmas\, Mr Lawrence which starred David Bowie. \n“As a music maker and curious explorer of the inner human experience\, Sakamoto’s life and work offers the gift of limitless inspiration. Playing his music is like looking deeply into your own soul…a profound experience.” \nContemplating his mortality in 2017\, Sakamoto said he wanted to make “music I won’t be ashamed to leave behind – meaningful work”. By any metric\, he already had. His view of himself was perpetually in flux. He had become interested in human playing through this circuitous route of the sampler: “I discovered something new about the piano.” \nThe significance of this return to the piano became increasingly apparent as his career moved from youthful pop star to chameleonic mature artist; the piano became an instrument at the centre of personal freedom\, rather than an archaic evolutionary stage leading to the synthesizer. And now\, what can we say\, he showed us music is never really about certainty\, only possibility\, and in possibility there is a way to live\, a positivity that Ryuichi Sakamoto never abandoned. \nDerry-born Ruth McGinley is widely recognised as one of Ireland’s leading pianists. Her career has been wide-ranging and daring\, collaborating with some of the most acclaimed musicians working today\, and straying from the typical classical-pianist journey. But it is perhaps the spaces between where Ruth’s interests really lie. A determination to walk her own path\, Ruth’s love of music goes far beyond the classical world. A highly sought-after collaborator\, Ruth loves to cross musical boundaries and work with musicians from a diverse range of backgrounds including jazz\, folk\, electronic and film. \nMatthew Nolan is a Dublin based musician\, composer\, academic and curator. He has produced new work in collaboration with some of the finest musicians around\, both Irish and international. He has worked on commissions from a range of prestigious performing arts institutions\, including National Gallery of Ireland\, BAM and Film at Lincoln Centre in New York\, The National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C.\, Kilkenny Arts Festival\, Bram Stoker Festival\, and the Saint Patrick’s Festival. His most recent projects were presented at MoLI in Dublin as part of their Ulysses centenary project and at the New York Film Festival filled up. 2024 will see the release of Pomes Penyeach by Universal Music\, produced in collaboration with Adrian Crowley and based on James Joyce’s short book of poetry.
