SUMMARY:Fledermaus
DESCRIPTION:Man-about-town Eisenstein is supposed to report to jail\, his wife Rosalinde will stay home for the night and their maid Adele needs to visit a sick aunt. Yet all three turn up in disguise at Count Orlofsky’s extravagant masked ball. The champagne flows as the waltzes play. Mistaken identities and heavy flirting lead to a night\, and an early morning\, of hilarity.\n Famous for his “The Blue Danube” waltz\, Fledermaus is Johann Strauss’ most popular opera. Best-known for its tunefulness\, upbeat musicality and Viennese lilt\, the story has hilarious twists and turns\, with disguises\, double crossings and rivers of champagne. \n Fledermaus showcases outstanding Irish vocal talent with sopranos Jade Phoenix and Sarah Shine as Rosalinde and her maid Adele\, and mezzo-soprano Sharon Carty as Prince Orlofsky. American tenor Alex McKissick sings Eisenstein and baritone Ben McAteer (Don Pasquale 2023) is Dr Falke. The ensemble cast also includes soprano Megan O’Neill and tenors Aaron O’Hare and William Pearson. Fledermaus is conducted by Richard Peirson and directed Davey Kelleher\, with set design by Paul O’Mahony\, costume design by Catherine Fay and lighting design by Sinead McKenna. \n Fledermaus is sung in German with English subtitles.

SUMMARY:Christine Mackey: Seeking to walk beautifully on the earth
DESCRIPTION:Earth’s skin is not one soil but many soils. Each has its own story. Soils are active. They are born. They age. They breathe. Soils are in a state of constant change in cycles with no beginning and no end. We are the custodians of this living organism\, earth’s green mantle. \nThis opening statement by the artist Christine Mackey sets the stage for her solo exhibition\, Seeking to walk beautifully on the earth\, which opens at The Model on Sat. 1 February. \nMackey’s artistic practice is one of profound stewardship\, observation and care for the environment\, and is deeply rooted in site-specific land and marine-based work. Seasonal processes range from collecting seeds\, to weaving floating islands\, to nourishing native tree saplings\, to the cultivation of waste ground. \nSeeking to walk beautifully on the earth is accompanied by a unique series of mini residencies undertaken by invited multi-disciplinary artists whose work resonates with Mackey’s practice. Each artist-in-residence will present free workshops over six weeks throughout February and March\, offering members of the public and invited groups the opportunity to explore a range of concepts and techniques from mycology\, world-building\, weaving\, making dyes and pigments\, to story-telling and illustration. \nMackey’s exhibition is particularly relevant today\, as it resonates with urgent issues of biodiversity loss\, species extinction\, energy crises\, and habitat destruction\, while at the same time highlighting positive themes of renewal\, awareness\, and change. \nThe works are assembled as a series of chapters rooted in key locations. Huddle began as a public seed planting exercise in Wexford to explore the habitat of native bees. It looks at the way in which wild pollinators are under threat from pollution and adverse changes to the climate. Auction is an experimental docu-style video that documents Mackey’s residency at a kelp farm in South Korea. This work visualizes the implications of industrial-scale seaweed farming on the local marine environment and on migratory communities. This experience prompted Mackey to develop several large-scale hybrid drawings of aquatic plants that are sewn in sections utilizing a Korean technique to make wrapping cloth from waste material. \nBoils\, Bitters\, and Scores is a unique artist’s book that reflects Mackey’s long-term engagement with biological narratives\, where the distinct voice of each plant is conveyed through their words and realized in their pigments. \nThe variable materials and processes used in this exhibition activate new ideas related to site\, agency and ecology which opens a myriad of conversation on the fragility of earths systems. \nWorkshops with the invited artists can be booked here. The exhibition continues until 22 March.

SUMMARY:Hansel & Gretel
DESCRIPTION:Sligo Hospital Musical Society Returns After Five-Year Hiatus!\n After a five-year break due to the COVID-19 pandemic\, the much-loved Sligo Hospital Pantomime is back with an exciting production of Hansel & Gretel. This year’s return comes with mixed emotions for the cast and crew\, as they remember their late co-director\, Deirdre Staunton\, who passed away last year. \n While the cast is thrilled to return to the stage\, Deirdre’s absence is deeply felt. Deirdre’s impact on the panto since its inception in 1997 has been truly remarkable. Her energy and passion infused every rehearsal and performance\, creating a vibrant atmosphere that inspired everyone involved. The cast feels privileged to carry on her legacy\, ensuring her vision and spirit live on in every show. \n Niamh Manly\, who steps into the role of solo director\, expressed her excitement for the January shows\, stating\, “While we’ll never forget Deirdre’s energy\, fun\, and spirit that made the panto so special\, we know she’d be the first person saying to get on with a new show!” Niamh\, alongside the dedicated team of hospital staff who volunteer their time each year\, is eager to bring the magical story of Hansel & Gretel to life for the Sligo community. \n The Sligo Hospital Musical Society pantomime has been an annual event for 27 years\, raising over €200\,000 for local causes. The Panto is entirely produced and performed by hospital staff\, the pantomime has become a cherished tradition\, with all proceeds supporting local charities. \n This family-friendly pantomime follows the adventures of Hansel\, Gretel\, and their motley crew\, with plenty of humour\, music\, and colourful characters to entertain audiences of all ages. The shows promise a week of laughter and entertainment to chase away the January blues.

SUMMARY:The Special Consensus
DESCRIPTION:Chicago-based bluegrass outfit Special Consensus have achieved a contemporary sound in over four decades of performing\, making their music a modern classic. Band members include leader Greg Cahill (banjo)\, Dan Eubanks (bass)\, Greg Blake (guitar) and Brian McCarty (mandolin). Two-time GRAMMY nominees and six-time IBMA winners\, the group has amassed an expansive discography of over 20 releases including 2020’s CHICAGO BARN DANCE which highlighted the important role the Windy City played in the early development of bluegrass music.\n With their latest release GREAT BLUE NORTH\, Special Consensus turns their gaze northward\, across the great lakes\, to Canada. The album offers a thoughtfully curated collection of well-known and obscure songs from Canadian writers and features collaborations with some Canada’s most notable bluegrass and folk musicians. Band leader Greg Cahill comments: “Special Consensus has toured regularly in Canada since our earliest days and counts many great Canadian bluegrass players and singers among our musical friends. After we released ‘Blackbird’\, penned by Cape Breton-based J.P. Cormier\, as a single last year we began to think that recording an album of all Canadian songs would be a great way to tip our hats to the immense talent in the Canadian bluegrass community. Getting to collaborate with some of our northern friends on the project was the icing on the cake.” \n Taken as a whole\, GREAT BLUE NORTH expands Special Consensus’s musical footprint\, furthering their legacy as Chicago’s premiere bluegrass ambassadors and establishing them as torchbearers for the international reach of bluegrass music. Cahill adds: “We hope the international bluegrass community will enjoy the new music and join us in celebrating the fact that bluegrass music truly has no borders!” \n GREAT BLUE NORTH is the 21st Special Consensus recording. The Gordon Lightfoot song from the album “Alberta Bound” received the 2023 IBMA Collaborative Recording of the Year Award and the accompanying video won the IBMA Music Video Of The Year Award in September 2024. Vocalist Greg Blake was the winner of the IBMA Male Vocalist Of The Year Award in 2023. \n Special Consensus have been coming to Ireland biennially since the mid ‘90’s and have established an extensive legion of fans over the years.
