SUMMARY:Altan
DESCRIPTION:Altan is arguably the most iconic band working in traditional Irish music today. For the past 35 years\, they have been bringing the music of their native County Donegal to the world stage. Irish-language songs and dynamic twin-fiddling\, the hallmarks of Altan’s sound\, framework the band’s newest album\, aptly titled Donegal. The album’s 10 tracks pay homage to Donegal’s rich musical heritage\, breathtaking landscapes\, and vibrant culture. The authenticity and allure of the music transports listeners to a bygone time in rural Ireland while simultaneously forging a connection between the past and modern times.\n Bandleader\, lead vocalist and fiddler Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh is in fine form\, lending her angelic voice to “Liostáil mé le Sáirsint” and “The Barley and the Rye” and contributing “Port Árainn Mhór/Port Kitty Rua Mooney\,” an outstanding set of jigs\, to the project. Altan’s newest member\, Clare Friel\, shares vocal duties with Ní Mhaonaigh\, most notably on the track “Faoiseamh a Geheobhadsa” and adds her fiery twin fiddle playing to great effect. Accordionist Martin Tourish brings his formidable chops and compositional sense to the medley “The House of Baoithín” which pays homage to the mid 6th century Saint Baoithín. Dáithí Sproule (guitar)\, Mark Kelly (guitar\, harmony vocals) and Ciarán Curran (bouzouki\, mandolin) round out the band which is augmented by special guests Jim Higgins (percussion)\, Steve Cooney (bass) and Graham Henderson (keyboards) on select tracks. \n Recorded by Manus Lunny at Stiúidió na Mara (“Seafront Studio”) in County Donegal\, Donegal captures the essence of the region which has inspired Altan since the band’s inception and further cements Altan’s legacy as one of the great cultural treasures of Ireland. \n No trad Irish band in the last thirty years has had a wider impact on audiences throughout the world than Altan. Formed in County Donegal in 1987 by lead vocalist Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh and her late husband Frankie Kennedy\, the group’s music is influenced by traditional Irish language songs and tunes from Donegal. SUMMARY:Mary Coughlan 40th Anniversary Tour
DESCRIPTION:Its hard to believe that 4 decades have passed since Mary Coughlan went into the studio to record her debut album ‘Tired and Emotional’.\nThat album led to appearances on The Late Late Show\, a hit single with ‘Delaney’s Gone Back On The Wine’\, and led to Mary establishing her position as the First Lady of Jazz and Blues in Ireland. \nHeavily inspired by Billie Holiday and Bessie Smith she also embraces rock\, folk\, and chanson (Edith Piaf) influences in her work. \nDon’t miss this opportunity to join this iconic singer in celebrating 40 years of the most uncompromising\, wholly personal\, and universal music by any Irish artist. \nUncut – “Mary is a living link between Billie Holliday and Amy Winehouse.” \nBlues in the South – “A wonderful example of a jazz-based album. Sometimes called a new Billie Holliday\, but she is better than that. She turns her stunning voice to anything\, not a duff track here.” \nAudiofileman.com – “This new album is beautifully mastered & bathes in a delicate wash of space & air that tracks reverb from the vocal all the way down to cymbal taps. Coughlan has a voice chiselled by years of experiences & she’s now telling her story. Her lyrics are delivered with great weight and a knowledge of what goes on out there.” \nGet Ready To Rock – “‘Life Stories’ is a reaffirmation of what fans already know is a special talent. ****” \nBlues Blues.co.uk – “Life Stories is storytelling at its best and she makes you believe that you are listening to her life stories”. \nRhthym & Booze – “Coughlin delivers a stirring\, compelling and brutally honest album full of addictive highs and heart-wrenching lows.” \nMusic Republic – 5/5***** “One listen to her stunning new album & it’d be obvious to a deaf man that her effortless vocal ability is a rare gift & she can more than back up the accolades & reward the adulation.” \nMusicriot.com – 5/5*****““Life Stories” is one of the best albums I’ve heard this year. It’s a journey from pessimism to optimism with occasional flashbacks and doesn’t ignore the fact that even the most horrific journeys can have their humorous twists and turns. It’s a fine set of musicians creating settings that make these twelve diamonds sparkle.” \nVelvet Thunder – “To hear her sing is truly to be at the core of the human heart”.

SUMMARY:Outrage
DESCRIPTION:‘War makes heroes and demons doesn’t it\, so how could war in Ireland be any different?’\nTold through the prism of two sisters OUTRAGE is a play that explores the true nature of women’s role in the Irish revolutionary wars and in particular the effect of Civil War on women’s mind\, body and soul. \nAlice and Nell play key roles in arming revolutionaries\, organising civic resistance and in particular the propaganda war. It was presented in partnership with Dublin Port Company\, and Meath County Council\, during St Patrick’s Festival 2022\, as part of the Department of Tourism\, Culture\, Arts\, Gaeltacht\, Sport and Media’s Decade of Centenaries programme. Fishamble is delighted to revive this highly acclaimed production on national tour\, to audiences throughout the country\, with support of an Arts Council Touring grant. \nCast: \nNaoise Dunbar\nCaitriona Ennis\nMary Murray \nDuration: 80 minutes\, no interval. \nAge guidance: 14+ \nContent Warning: Includes depiction of violent sexual assault. \nIf you have been affected by the themes of this play\, please see the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre website for resources.

SUMMARY:Informal Music Afternoon in November
DESCRIPTION:Informal Music Afternoons are a series of monthly events\, presented in partnership with Sligo Baroque Orchestra\, where an eclectic mix of music is performed in a welcoming format in The Model’s Atrium space. The Informal Music Afternoon is an ideal way to spend a calm Sunday afternoon. The idea behind this event is to make classical music accessible for all\, by means of an informal concert with a relaxed atmosphere in a cafe-style setting. Musicians perform classical works in addition to a non-classical section – often folk\, traditional or jazz. \nÓsta@TheModel will be open from 12 noon serving refreshments and a selection of lite bites. The concerts start at 1pm\, but we recommend coming at 12:30pm so you can enjoy a coffee or a glass of wine from the wonderful café prior.

The first of these artworks presented to the Sligo County Library and Museum in 1965 was The Sea and The Lighthouse by Jack B Yeats. Bequeathed to the FNCI by Dorothea Case in 1947\, this work is now a cornerstone of The Niland Collection\, and continues to offer both contemporary and historical narratives to our multi-vocal curatorial vision. \nThe acquisition is also testimony to the vision of Nora Niland\, who played a significant role in attracting such important artworks to help build our collection. Niland follows in the footsteps of other inspirational Irish women\, who dedicated their lives to the development of the visual arts in Ireland\, notably artist Sarah Purser\, who was an active collector of artworks; which she hung in the rooms of her home\, Mespil House in Dublin. Purser regularly hosted artist gatherings in her home and in 1924\, she and a group of friends founded The Friends of the National Collections of Ireland – for the purpose of acquiring works of art and objects of historical interest and donating them to national and regional art galleries and museums throughout Ireland. \nThis exhibition brings together works which are both thought-provoking and contemplative\, and which mirror the thoughts\, subject matter and concerns of artists throughout the twentieth century. \nAll works in this exhibition have been generously gifted to The Niland Collection by the Friends of the National Collections of Ireland. \nImage credit: Barbara Warren (b. 1925); Girl with a Goose\, N.D.\, oil on canvas.

SUMMARY:Jack Butler Yeats; Salt Water Ballads
DESCRIPTION:Jack Butler Yeats (1871-1957) grew up in Sligo\, in the care of his maternal grandparents Elizabeth & William Pollexfen. From an early age\, the young artist was steeped in the rich sea-faring culture of the area\, where the ocean connected a small town on Europe’s western periphery with the enigmatic outside world. Throughout Yeats’ long career as an artist\, this fascination with the drama and mystique of the ocean remained a constant amongst his many abiding artistic themes. \nYeats’ affinity with the sea was shared by his good friend\, the acclaimed poet John Masefield. Masefield had joined the navy aged just 13 years\, and set sail for Chile on his first voyage three years later. Masefield and Jack Yeats bonded over their shared love of art and theatre\, tales of the high seas\, sea-faring vessels and pirate lore. In the summer of 1901\, Masefield holidayed at Yeats’ home in Devon\, where together they fashioned model boats from the rough materials to hand – card board boxes\, tin cans\, stones\, wood and paper\, and sailed them in a nearby stretch of water called the Gara River. During that time\, Yeats and Masefield also collaborated artistically on a rich treasure trove of oceanic drama\, comprised of ballads\, miniature plays and illustrations. Chief amongst the human characters that populated their imaginary sea-themed dreamscape was Theodore\, a cabin boy and the adopted son of the infamous French pirate\, Jean Lafitte. \nIn 2017\, The Niland Collection was gifted a body of work by Jack Butler Yeats\, purchased especially by a private collector. Among these works was a wooden linen chest\, lined with 19 sea-themed watercolour drawings by the artist. Due to their placement on wood and metal\, the drawings had deteriorated somewhat in the 100 years since their creation. In 2020\, The Model secured funds from the Heritage Council for their restoration; and in a process led by Dr Patrick McBride\, one of Ireland’s leading conservators\, each individual work was carefully removed and restored. In an unexpected turn of events\, new works by Yeats were revealed underneath the visible drawings\, including two unseen watercolours\, as well as a number of prints. \nThis exhibition includes the restored watercolours\, as well as the original Linen Chest with replica drawings affixed as the originals were placed. Yeats’ own collection of model and handmade boats\, which were also donated by the same benefactor is also on view. The miniature figure of Theodore\, the Pirate\, with the word ‘help’ written on this back\, was found during the conservation work\, stowed away in the hull of one of the model boats.
