DESCRIPTION:Feis Shligigh was founded in 1903 as a Gaelic Feis for Connacht. The aims are the revival of our national Language and Heritage. Dr. Douglas Hyde\, first President of Ireland\, adjudicated the Irish Language Competitions in those early days.After a few years the Feis lapsed until 1929 and since then has continued to grow from year to year to the present day. All sections of the Feis ran concurrently during Easter Week until 2006 when\, because of increasing numbers of competitors. \nFeis Shligigh is held annually in memory of Seamus Devins.

SUMMARY:St Patrick's Day Festival
DESCRIPTION:This year’s festival will be held in a marquee installation in Queen Maeve Square. The festivities begin on March 16th with performances by Music Generation\, taking place in the marquee from approximately 6pm -10 pm \nOn St. Patrick’s Day\, the marquee will host “The Scruffy Kids Show” from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM. This junior disco\, hosted by MC Scruffy\, includes special guests and interactive games. The evening program features headliners The Tumbling Paddies\, supported by The Dublin City Ramblers and One for the Road. \n \nThe parade itself starts at midday on March 17th on Mail Coach Road and flows through the town ending at Pearse Road past the Garda Station. \nRoute Map can be viewed here: https://sligostpatricksday.com/our-parade/ \nThere will be 3 wheelchair access viewing areas at O’Connell St\, Quay St and Teeling St. We advise arriving as early as possible as space will be limited. \nFor anyone who may have sensory needs\, there will be a Quiet zone at Quay St. \nThe parade at 12pm on March 17th will also be live streamed on the Sligo St Patricks Youtube and Facebook pages\, if you know of anyone who cannot attend and you may watch it back later anytime after the parade \n \n \nKey Dates: \n– Build Start: March 12th \n– Event Starts: March 16th \n– Event Finishes: March 17th \n– Breakdown: March 18th \n  \nThe Sligo St. Patrick’s Festival is set to return this March with a vibrant programme of events\, blending much-loved traditions with exciting new experiences for all ages. With the 2026 theme\, “Legends Live Here”\, the festival promises five days of celebration\, culture and community spirit across Sligo town. \nThe Parade – March 17th \nThe centrepiece of the festival\, the St. Patrick’s Day Parade\, returns on March 17th\, following its traditional route through Sligo town. The parade will kick off at 12pm. \nFamily Fun & Cultural Highlights \n\nSligo Rovers will be facing off against Shamrock Rovers on Friday 13 March in the Showgrounds. This is the one St. Patrick’s Festival event where wearing red is strongly encouraged over green!\nMusic Generation Sligo will present a special showcase in a fully covered marquee at Queen Maeve’s Square on Monday 16 March\, 6–8pm.This vibrant evening of live music will feature young musicians from across Music Generation Sligo programmes\, including bands from the MGS Band Programme\, a harp ensemble\, youth and teen choirs (Sligo Youth Voices and Sligo Voice Collective)\, and 6th class students from Scoil Ursula\, who take part in the Discovering and Performing Music primary school programme. The centrepiece of the event will be a special prequel performance offering audiences a first look at music developed through the Music Generation Sligo / Sligo Co Council Peace Plus project\, Tuning into Social Inclusion\, spearheaded by composer Stephen Doherty.\nAfter the parade on Tuesday 17 March from 2pm\, families can enjoy the Shamrock Shuffle with Sligo legend Scruffy Duffy\, featuring a kiddies’ disco and fun games.\nSligo Abbey will open its historic doors for a special free family treasure hunt\, complete with edible prizes\, alongside a bespoke St. Patrick’s themed tour for history enthusiasts on Tuesday 17 March.\nThe Avalon Centre will host a celebration of cultures from 2pm–4pm on Tuesday 17 March\, with free entry for all.\n\nEvening Entertainment & Trad Trail \nAs night falls\, adults can enjoy live performances from Tumbling Paddies\, One for the Road\, and The Dublin City Ramblers in the Marquee in Queen Maeve Square. \nA lively Trad Trail will run from Friday 13th to Tuesday 17th March\, filling venues across town with traditional Irish music. \nFree walking tours will take place on March 16th and 17th\, with booking available via the official festival website. \nA morning mountain hike hosted by North West Adventure Tours offers a unique start to your St. Patrick’s Day on March 17th. \nAccessibility for All \nThrough the Sligo NTE pilot\, Accessoloo will operate in Queen Maeve Square from 11am to 10:30pm on March 17th\, ensuring that everyone can enjoy the celebrations. SUMMARY:The Sunset Belongs to You - Portrait Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:The Model is delighted to present once more The Sunset Belongs to You – a series of portraits commissioned from two of Irelands most distinguished painters\, Mick O’Dea + Geraldine O’Neill. The portraits capture young people from diverse backgrounds living across County Sligo\, and were painted between 2022-23. Looked at together\, they provide a hopeful glimpse into the Ireland of the future. \nThe portraits have become part of The Niland Collection\, where they have taken on a meaningful presence alongside portraits of historic public figures\, activists\, artists and other changemakers. In this context\, the paintings demonstrate the importance\, equality and potential of each child to lead the way with confidence and vision towards a bright democratic future for Ireland. In commissioning the portraits\, The Model sought to challenge the ingrained traditional structures of portraiture to question who is reflected in a public art collection\, and who is overlooked. Sligo communities who have been under-represented in the past\, are made visible within the public collection of their local museum. \nMick O’Dea painted all 12 of his portraits over the course of one week in front of a live audience at The Model. During the sittings he engaged the children and the public in an open dialogue about the ideas that underpin portraiture. Taking a different approach\, Geraldine O’Neill painted each of her sitters over several months\, finalising a portrait through a slow and immersive engagement with each child and their family. \nThe Sunset Belongs to You is named after a painting by Jack Butler Yeats. It is an inclusive reflection of contemporary society\, in all its diversity and richness that will live on in Sligo’s municipal art collection as a historical document into the future.
