SUMMARY:Jack Butler Yeats; A Painted Universe
DESCRIPTION:Jack Butler Yeats; A Painted Universe\nSat. 15 Nov. – Sun. 27 Sep. 2026\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJack Butler Yeats (1871–1957) is one of Ireland’s most celebrated twentieth-century artists. The Niland Collection\, housed at The Model\, holds an extensive body of his work spanning the full arc of his career – from early pen-and-ink illustrations and lively watercolours\, to the expressive oil paintings that define his mature style. \nYeats belonged to one of Ireland’s most remarkable artistic families. His father\, John Butler Yeats (1839–1922)\, was a portrait painter\, while his siblings – William Butler Yeats (1865–1939)\, Susan Mary Yeats (1866–1949) and Elizabeth Corbet Yeats (1868–1940) – were all distinguished figures in literature\, art and publishing. Unlike them\, Jack spent his childhood in Sligo with his maternal grandparents\, Elizabeth and William Pollexfen. The vivid life of the town and its people left a deep and lasting impression on him. From an early age\, he was captivated by the colour and drama of everyday life – a fascination that became the foundation of his art. \nThroughout his career\, Yeats returned to the people and scenes of his youth – the sailor\, the clown\, the traveller and the balladeer\, amongst others. Over time\, these subjects came to embody universal human experience in his work. His shift to oil painting from 1910 onwards marked a turning point. The early oils\, grounded in realism\, depict ordinary lives and the social and political world of early twentieth-century Ireland. From the mid-1920s\, however\, his art grew increasingly expressive and symbolic\, as the paint itself became a means to convey emotion and transcendence. \nIn his later works – charged with pathos and intensity – familiar figures take on a metaphysical dimension\, revealing Yeats’s lifelong quest to paint not only the world he saw\, but the inner universe he felt. A Painted Universe invites visitors to encounter these presences and step into Yeats’s artistic world\, where memory\, emotion and experience are transformed into colour\, form and light.

SUMMARY:Black Pig Festival Enniscrone
DESCRIPTION:Set along the sweeping Atlantic shoreline\, the Black Pig Festival is the heartbeat of summer in the seaside village of Enniscrone\, drawing locals and visitors together each year for a lively celebration of community\, culture and coastal life. Held at the end of July\, the festival transforms the town into a vibrant hub of music\, food and family-friendly entertainment. \nAt the centre of it all is a story. The festival takes its name from the legendary Black Pig of Muckdubh\, a mythical wild boar said to have rampaged from Donegal to Enniscrone before finally being slain by locals. According to folklore\, the creature was so enormous it had to be buried beneath a mound of earth\, giving the area its name and inspiring a tradition that lives on today. \nWhile its origins lie in myth\, the modern festival is anything but dark. It is a joyful\, energetic event that reflects the spirit of the town itself. Across several days\, Enniscrone comes alive with open-air concerts\, beach activities\, funfairs and community events. From sandcastle competitions and heritage walks to triathlons\, live music and fireworks over Killala Bay\, there is a strong sense of inclusivity\, with something for every age group. \nFood also plays a central role\, with events like the “Taste of Enniscrone” bringing together local producers and showcasing the best of the region’s flavours. Combined with the Atlantic backdrop and long summer evenings\, it creates a festival atmosphere that feels both relaxed and electric at the same time. \nUltimately\, the Black Pig Festival is more than an annual event. It is a celebration of storytelling\, place and people\, where ancient legend meets modern coastal life\, and where a small Sligo village opens itself up to the world in a uniquely warm and memorable way.

SUMMARY:Taste of Sligo Food Festival
DESCRIPTION:Set against the lively backdrop of Queen Maeve’s Square in the heart of Sligo\, the Taste of Sligo Food Festival has quickly established itself as one of the most exciting culinary gatherings along Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way. First launched in 2024\, the festival was created to showcase the richness of Sligo’s food culture while drawing together chefs\, producers and food lovers for a vibrant weekend of flavour\, creativity and community. \nAt its core\, the festival is a celebration of place. Sligo\, long known for its coastal produce\, fertile land and deep-rooted food traditions\, provides the perfect setting for an event that blends local authenticity with contemporary culinary flair. From freshly caught seafood to artisan breads and craft drinks\, the festival offers visitors a genuine taste of the region’s identity. \nAcross the weekend\, Queen Maeve’s Square transforms into an open-air food theatre. Visitors can wander between bustling artisan stalls and food trucks\, sampling everything from gourmet street food to locally distilled spirits. Meanwhile\, live cookery demonstrations bring energy and expertise to the stage\, with well-known chefs and local culinary talents sharing techniques\, stories and inspiration. \nBut the festival is about more than just food. Live music fills the square\, families gather for entertainment and activities\, and long communal tables encourage a relaxed\, social atmosphere. The inclusion of al fresco dining reflects a wider shift in Irish food culture\, where eating is not just about sustenance but about experience\, connection and storytelling. \nThe vision behind the event comes from restaurateur Anthony Gray\, who sought to create an annual showcase that highlights both the quality of local produce and the strength of Sligo’s food community. His ambition was simple yet powerful: to celebrate everything that is good about food in the county while inviting visitors to discover it for themselves. \nAs it continues to grow\, the Taste of Sligo Food Festival is becoming a key date in Ireland’s food tourism calendar. It reflects a broader movement across the country\, where regional festivals are redefining how people engage with local cuisine. In Sligo\, this takes shape as a lively\, welcoming and flavour-filled experience\, one that captures the spirit of the northwest in every bite. \nTickets are available here \n

SUMMARY:Tubbercurry Old Fair Day
DESCRIPTION:Over 50 Traditional Crafts and Heritage Demonstrations to Feature at Tubbercurry Old Fair Day Festival 2026 \nAs Ireland celebrates Craft Month this August\, Tubbercurry Old Fair Day Festival returns with one of the country’s largest showcases of traditional skills and heritage\, bringing together more than 50 craft and heritage demonstrations on Old Fair Day\, Wednesday 12th August together with displays of vintage machinery\, crafts and live music. \nCelebrating 41 years since the revival of the traditional Fair Day in 1985\, the five-day festival (8–12 August) has grown into one of Ireland’s leading heritage events\, attracting visitors from across Ireland while also welcoming members of the diaspora back to Tubbercurry to reconnect with their roots and community. \nFrom basket weaving\, pottery\, ironmongery and thatching to wood turning\, butter making\, haymaking\, threshing and traditional musical instrument making\, visitors will have the opportunity to meet skilled craftspeople and heritage practitioners who continue to preserve and share these important traditions. \nRather than simply viewing exhibits\, visitors are encouraged to immerse themselves in the experience. The Heritage and Craft Village offers opportunities to engage with demonstrators\, learn about traditional skills and gain a deeper understanding of Ireland’s rich cultural heritage. Families can also visit the Little Folks Fair\, where children can try their hand at traditional crafts\, creative activities and interactive workshops designed to inspire the next generation of makers and storytellers. Combined with artisan food producers\, vintage displays\, animal exhibits\, music and family entertainment\, the festival provides a unique opportunity to experience the traditions\, skills and community spirit that shaped rural Ireland for generations. \nFestival Chair Louise Kilbane said: “At the heart of the Tubbercurry Old Fair Day Festival is a commitment to preserving and celebrating our heritage. The crafts and demonstrations on display are not simply exhibitions; they are living traditions being passed from one generation to the next. We are proud to provide a platform for these skilled craftspeople while creating an authentic and immersive experience for visitors of all ages. We are also very proud of our new Youth Committee\, established this year to help shape the future of the festival. Their enthusiasm\, ideas and involvement ensure that the traditions we celebrate today will continue to be valued and enjoyed by future generations.” \nA key feature of this year’s festival is the continued involvement of young people through the Old Fair Day Youth Committee. Young volunteers have played an active role in shaping elements of the programme\, helping ensure that the festival remains relevant and engaging for future generations while maintaining its strong connection to local traditions and community values. The Youth Committee will organise the popular Family Fun Day and support activities throughout the festival\, helping to create opportunities for children and families to connect with local heritage through fun\, interactive experiences. \nThe highlight of the festival takes place on Wednesday 12th August when the streets of Tubbercurry are transformed into a bustling Fair Day experience featuring hundreds of exhibitors\, traditional craft and heritage demonstrations\, artisan food and craft stalls\, vintage machinery and vehicle displays\, children’s entertainment\, street performances and interactive family activities. Visitors can spend the day exploring the sights\, sounds and traditions of rural Ireland before enjoying a free outdoor concert in Wolfe Tone Square featuring one of Ireland’s most popular country music stars\, Jimmy Buckley and His Band. \nFamilies can enjoy the Little Folks Fair in St Brigid’s Hall\, featuring crafts\, workshops\, activities and a dedicated sensory area\, while visitors can also take part in dance workshops with South Sligo Summer School and Bróga Bríomhar Dance School. Ocean FM will broadcast live from Wolfe Tone Square. \nThe festival programme also includes the Tubbercurry Trail Parkrun\, Teddy Bears’ Picnic\, Duck Race\, Live music on the Saturday night with Wolfhound\, Family Fun activities on Sunday and Tuesday\, Square Sundays Car and Coffee Meet Up\, the Real Tubber Headers Cup and a celebration of 80 years of Phoenix Players. \nAs a voluntary community festival\, Tubbercurry Old Fair Day continues to thrive thanks to the support of local businesses\, sponsors\, volunteers\, community organisations\, Sligo County Council\, Fáilte Ireland and visitors who return year after year. \nFor more information\, follow them on social media or visit their website: www.oldfairday.ie
