While it’s just for a few hours\, we promise that the memories will last a lifetime! \nWe’re looking for musicians and music lovers of any age\, any instrument\, any ability to be part of the beautiful music phenomena that is The Totally Made Up Orchestra \, a unique community music-making project. \nAnyone who has previously taken part in the orchestra has found it a joyous\, uplifting and unforgettable experience! \nHow it works? \nGuided by the inspirational Sid Peacock you will devise\, create and perform a completely new piece of music from scratch over the course of just a few hours. (this is then performed at the 2pm public performance) \nIt doesn’t matter if you have been playing for years or minutes! It doesn’t matter if you are 9 or 90! If you can read music – great! SUMMARY:Ballygawley Music Festival
DESCRIPTION:Ballygawley Music Festival has officially launched its line-up for 2025. It is the 5th anniversary of the festival which has gone from strength to strength since its founding in 2019. The festival is not for profit event and it is run by a group of energetic volunteers from the community with support from our many sponsors. The aim of the event is to host a unique and diverse music event annually in the village (over 18s). \nThis year’s event will take place from the 17-20th July. On Thursday 17th July\, the marquee will play host to Ballygawley Kids Fest from 5.30pm. The Tumbling Paddies will headline Friday 18th July with support from Claudia Buckley and her band. Saturday 19th July will see Sean Magee\, One for the Road and Derek Ryan take to the main stage whilst Sunday 20th July will see Mike Denver and Johnny Brady close out the festival. \nThomas Walsh\, one of the organisers\, said: “We are expecting our biggest crowds to date in 2025 and we have a line-up to match. We have continued to invest in the event\, its branding and promotion and we are looking forward to people from around the country and overseas to descend on Ballygawley Village. The event is only made possible by the large numbers of volunteers its takes to support us in to run the event over the weekend\, it can take up to 60-80 volunteers per night and we are very thankful for the support. DESCRIPTION:The South Sligo Summer School was founded in 1987 in Tubbercurry\, Co. Sligo to conserve and promote the rich tradition of music\, song and dance of the area. With a full programme of classes\, workshops\, céilithe\, concerts\, recitals and talks\, there is special emphasis on the old Sligo traditional style of playing whilst also including a range of instruments from uilleann pipes to bodhrán as well as embracing new ideas and giving a platform to young emerging local musicians\, many of whom are former pupils of the summer school\, to share their talents with our visitors of all ages from near and far. \nThere are so many different facets to this wonderful festival including; \n\nWorkshops\nConcerts and recitals\nCéilís\nLectures\n\nWorkshops: \nWorkshops are available on all traditional instruments from world class teachers. All abilities are catered for and you will have great craic as you go too. \nConcerts and recitals: \nOur 2025 series of Concerts and Recitals will be held nightly at 8 pm in ‘The May Queen’ Tubbercurry from Monday 14th through to Friday 18th July. \nWe are delighted to announce that this year’s Monday night concert is a Tribute to mother and daughter\, Bernie and Holly Geraghty\, who have been long time contributors to the success of the South Sligo Summer School. They will be joined on stage by fellow tutors\, family and musician friends and a great night’s musical celebration is in store. From Ballindine\, Co. Mayo\, Bernie has taught countless students throughout the region and is highly respected as both a music teacher and session musician. Holly now lives in Galway and has been the backbone of our harp classes at the summer school for many years. \nThe recitals throughout the week will feature an eclectic mix of tutors\, students\, local and visiting musicians with the Friday Night Concert highlighting our tutors and friends as well as our local stalwarts of the tradition. Each year the large and appreciative audiences are treated to a feast of the very best of traditional Irish music\, song and dance over the five nights. It lies at the foot of the Ox Mountains\, on the N17 national primary road. Tubbercurry is a fifteen minute drive from Ireland West International Airport with daily flights from several destinations in the UK\, including London Heathrow\, as well as regular flights from many destinations across mainland Europe. The nearest railway station in Ballymote\, on the Dublin – Sligo line\, is a twenty minute drive from Tubbercurry. The Sligo – Derry Bus Eireann Expressway route stops ion Tubbercurry several times a day and we are also serviced by the Feda O’Donnell Galway – Donegal bus route. \nVisitors to Tubbercurry and South Sligo can enjoy a wide range of outdoor activities while visiting our area\, with lots of walks\, including the Tubbercurry Forest Trail\, on our doorstep as well as a nine hole golf course within easy walking distance of the centre of town. The Centre are encouraging Strandhill locals\, Sligo residents and visitors\, to come visit the National Surf Centre and Strandhill on Saturday 5th October and partake in some of the free activities on offer. \nAs well as being a Centre for Surf and home to three Surf Schools\, Atlantic Surf School\, Rebelle Surf School and Sligo Surf Experience\, the National Surf Centre work with a number of local expert facilitators to run experiences in or from Centre. The day’s activities kick off at 11.30am in the morning with a Smartphone Safari\, with Paul Richardson of Jet Black Squares. Paul will bring you on a short tour of your smartphone camera which\, chances are\, you haven’t taken properly before\, and then embark on a photo experience across Strandhill beach. Culminating in a social gathering in Honestly. \nEnjoy a social seaweed foraging adventure at midday with Lucianne Hare and Nourished in Nature. You will learn about the story of seaweed in Ireland\, foraging and harvesting\, before delving into some seaweed treats and herbal tea served back at the National Surf Centre. Not to be missed is an opportunity to make your own seaweed butter as you enjoy a Seaweed Infused Masterclass with Irish Seaweed Kitchen and the renowned Dr. Prannie Rhatigan. Prannie shares her insights over the last 25 year through her demonstration workshop on the benefits of seaweeds and how we can incorporate them into our daily diet. \nThe last experience of the day will be a first for the Centre – an inaugural session hosted by award winning photographer George Karbus\, as George brings you on an inspirational photographic journey along the Wild Atlantic Way. There are a number of free places for all the activities listed\, so please email wave@nationalsurfcentre.ie to book your spot. Because when they’re gone…. they’re gone! \nThe same can be said of the free surf lesson spots that both Atlantic Surf School and Sligo Surf Experience are offering to mark the occasion of the day and their move into their new premises at the Centre. They can be booked directly or enquired about through the Centre. In between the experiences\, there will be a short ceremony at 2.15pm to honour the naming of the meeting rooms and spaces at the Centre\, namely the Philip Douglas Room and The Four Winds Plaza in recognition of those that have paved the way for others. \nA Showcase of Strandhill will run then up till 15.30pm with Honestly\, Mammy Johnstons and Shells\, all providing some free tastings and giveaways\, showcasing taste sensational products which have made them renowned throughout the county and beyond. “We have such an excellent offering in Strandhill in all of our providers\, and I thank them for their support of the day’s events” quotes Rebecca Stevens\, Director of Operations at the Centre. “They make a visit to Strandhill special and memorable for many visitors”. “We are very lucky in Sligo to live and work so close to places likes Strandhill”\, continues Ms Stevens\, “Strandhill is a gem of a village\, in a beautiful setting\, in a fantastic part of the country.
