SUMMARY:Altan
DESCRIPTION:Altan is arguably the most iconic band working in traditional Irish music today. For the past 35 years\, they have been bringing the music of their native County Donegal to the world stage. Irish-language songs and dynamic twin-fiddling\, the hallmarks of Altan’s sound\, framework the band’s newest album\, aptly titled Donegal. The album’s 10 tracks pay homage to Donegal’s rich musical heritage\, breathtaking landscapes\, and vibrant culture. The authenticity and allure of the music transports listeners to a bygone time in rural Ireland while simultaneously forging a connection between the past and modern times.\n Bandleader\, lead vocalist and fiddler Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh is in fine form\, lending her angelic voice to “Liostáil mé le Sáirsint” and “The Barley and the Rye” and contributing “Port Árainn Mhór/Port Kitty Rua Mooney\,” an outstanding set of jigs\, to the project. Altan’s newest member\, Clare Friel\, shares vocal duties with Ní Mhaonaigh\, most notably on the track “Faoiseamh a Geheobhadsa” and adds her fiery twin fiddle playing to great effect. Accordionist Martin Tourish brings his formidable chops and compositional sense to the medley “The House of Baoithín” which pays homage to the mid 6th century Saint Baoithín. Dáithí Sproule (guitar)\, Mark Kelly (guitar\, harmony vocals) and Ciarán Curran (bouzouki\, mandolin) round out the band which is augmented by special guests Jim Higgins (percussion)\, Steve Cooney (bass) and Graham Henderson (keyboards) on select tracks. \n Recorded by Manus Lunny at Stiúidió na Mara (“Seafront Studio”) in County Donegal\, Donegal captures the essence of the region which has inspired Altan since the band’s inception and further cements Altan’s legacy as one of the great cultural treasures of Ireland. \n No trad Irish band in the last thirty years has had a wider impact on audiences throughout the world than Altan. Formed in County Donegal in 1987 by lead vocalist Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh and her late husband Frankie Kennedy\, the group’s music is influenced by traditional Irish language songs and tunes from Donegal. Over the course of their career\, Altan has sold over a million records. \n Nashville\, TN (March 1\, 2024) – Traditional Irish music titans Altan release their new album DONEGAL today. SUMMARY:PJ Murrihy & Seamus Shannon
DESCRIPTION:PJ Murrihy is an Irish singer-songwriter from Mullagh in County Clare. He has penned many hits and songs that have been recorded by some of Ireland’s leading entertainers while also digging up old gems like “Pat Murphy’s Meadow”. As a youngster Murrihy learned songs from family members\, including his mother and two of his uncles. He started playing music professionally with Michael Sexton Senior\, Jimmy Ward and David Culligan and then went on to create his own group that was very much in demand called “The Bannerman”. \nDue to his growing popularity\, he was asked to play and record two albums with the infamous Kilfenora Ceili Band. In later years he teamed up with accordionist\, Seamus Shannon\, and they have been performing their own specialized Irish traditional and country songs. \nSeamus Shannon hails from Elphin\, Roscommon and is a world renowned accordion player. Seamus is also host of a very popular radio program called “Shannon’s Corner” on Shannonside Northern Sound Radio where he plays a mix of traditional\, folk\, country and Irish music with special guests joining on the airwaves. SUMMARY:Mary Coughlan 40th Anniversary Tour
DESCRIPTION:Its hard to believe that 4 decades have passed since Mary Coughlan went into the studio to record her debut album ‘Tired and Emotional’.\nThat album led to appearances on The Late Late Show\, a hit single with ‘Delaney’s Gone Back On The Wine’\, and led to Mary establishing her position as the First Lady of Jazz and Blues in Ireland. \nHeavily inspired by Billie Holiday and Bessie Smith she also embraces rock\, folk\, and chanson (Edith Piaf) influences in her work. \nDon’t miss this opportunity to join this iconic singer in celebrating 40 years of the most uncompromising\, wholly personal\, and universal music by any Irish artist. \nUncut – “Mary is a living link between Billie Holliday and Amy Winehouse.” \nBlues in the South – “A wonderful example of a jazz-based album. Sometimes called a new Billie Holliday\, but she is better than that. She turns her stunning voice to anything\, not a duff track here.” \nAudiofileman.com – “This new album is beautifully mastered & bathes in a delicate wash of space & air that tracks reverb from the vocal all the way down to cymbal taps. Coughlan has a voice chiselled by years of experiences & she’s now telling her story. Her lyrics are delivered with great weight and a knowledge of what goes on out there.” \nGet Ready To Rock – “‘Life Stories’ is a reaffirmation of what fans already know is a special talent. ****” \nBlues Blues.co.uk – “Life Stories is storytelling at its best and she makes you believe that you are listening to her life stories”. \nRhthym & Booze – “Coughlin delivers a stirring\, compelling and brutally honest album full of addictive highs and heart-wrenching lows.” \nMusic Republic – 5/5***** “One listen to her stunning new album & it’d be obvious to a deaf man that her effortless vocal ability is a rare gift & she can more than back up the accolades & reward the adulation.” \nMusicriot.com – 5/5*****““Life Stories” is one of the best albums I’ve heard this year. It’s a journey from pessimism to optimism with occasional flashbacks and doesn’t ignore the fact that even the most horrific journeys can have their humorous twists and turns. It’s a fine set of musicians creating settings that make these twelve diamonds sparkle.” \nVelvet Thunder – “To hear her sing is truly to be at the core of the human heart”.

SUMMARY:The Mulcahy Family
DESCRIPTION:The Mulcahy Family live in concert in the Coleman Music Centre\, Gurteen\, Co Sligo F56 TF88 on Saturday\, 9th November at 8pm. \nTickets €15. To book call:071 9182599 or book online at www.colemanirishmusic.com \nWhen the Mulcahy Family\, of Abbeyfeale\, West Limerick are involved the music is never ordinary and always close to the heart. That is the hallmark of the Mulcahy Family\, as the simplicity of the tunes takes on a new life when blended together with technique and familiarity all wrapped together in honesty and respect for the tradition. \nThat respect flows from the Mick Mulcahy\, 63\, originally from Brosna\, Co. Kerry where proximity to Sliabh Luachra and Co. Clare assured a firm foundation for the music. A member of the senior All-Ireland Brosna Ceili Band who won the gold in Listowel in 1972\, he is a devoted musician all his life seeking out the best sessions and musicians. \nExposure to the likes of trad icons Willie Clancy and Seamus Ennis at August bank holiday weekends in Miltown Malbay set the tone and bar very high in the 1950s and 1960s for traditional music and on Mulcahy’s own development. When he and his wife\, Cecelia\, settled in Abbeyfeale to raise their family consisting of daughters Louise\, 26\, and Michelle\, 24\, it was clear that Irish music would be the family passion and cultural sustenance. \nAs infants\, the girls were regular visitors to the annual Willie Clancy Summer School and All-Ireland fleadhs\, later to be students and then teachers. \nTheir skill-sets on a variety of instruments provide for a tasteful layering on top of the tune that reveals their own sensitivity and natural flair for traditional music. Mostly self-taught\, Mick plays a variety of accordions\, concertina and melodeon\, Louise the tin-whistle\, uilleann pipes and primarily the concert flute while Michelle plays the harp\, concertina\, accordion\, fiddle and piano.
