SUMMARY:Rub Off The Dark - Presents Josephine Foster Plus Special Guests Perlee
DESCRIPTION:Josephine Foster is a singer-songwriter-composer whose voice seems to drift from another time. She has lent her warbling mezzo-soprano and interpretive wit to nearly two decades of self-produced recordings. Her songs are rooted in early American folk-blues as well as classical art song and Tin Pan Alley. She has crafted a singular body of work. Her music carries the soul of old folk songs\, operatic hymns\, and blues\, yet moves freely\, like a dream half-remembered. Born in the Mountain West\, she sang in a log cabin church as a girl before setting out on the road\, through Chicago’s back rooms to Spanish countryside villages and in and out of Nashville\, she has shaped a body of song that mirrors her wandering heart. Playing guitar\, piano/organ\, harp\, or autoharp\, Foster moves effortlessly between structure and spontaneity. Her performances feel both intimate and otherworldly\, drawing listeners into a world uniquely her own. A poet and visual artist as well as musician\, her playful ink pieces expand upon lyrical themes of her songs. \n‘A dreamily unique talent’ – The Guardian \nSupport from Perlee:\n‘Perlee are one of the country’s most singular talents.’ – The Thin Air \nPerlee are Cormac O’Keeffe and Saramai Leech. They are from County Meath\, Ireland\, and met through the musical scene in their town. They were in other bands before they began to collaborate and work as a duo. After almost a decade in Berlin they are currently based in Sligo. \nPerlee’s music ebbs and flows between dream pop and slow core in the vein of the Cocteau Twins\, Low and Beach House. So far they have released 2 E.P.s & an L.P. to excellent critical reception and radio play across Germany\, Ireland\, the U.S. and more. The couple\, who originally met through the DIY scene in their hometown of Navan\, formed Perlee whilst living in a small house in the farmer’s quarters of a large stately home\, surrounded by huge trees\, peacocks and farm dogs. The house was so remote that they were able to spend their evenings playing loud music late into the night. In 2018\, the pair moved to Berlin and quickly found a small flat in an old industrial part of Berlin called Moabit. They had the good fortune\, through friends\, of finding a rehearsal space on the grounds of an old hospital around the corner and began developing the sound they had first struck upon while living in the remote Irish countryside. In the early days\, the couple enjoyed the many spaces the city provided in which to showcase their music. They played hundreds of shows; in smoky bars\, house concerts and clubs until the pandemic hit. Their debut album Speaking From Other Rooms was released in April 2023 to rave reviews and sold out shows. In 2024 Perlee went into the studio to record their next record and after relocating to Ireland from Berlin\, they are currently mixing this sophomore album in Sligo.

SUMMARY:Josephine Foster
DESCRIPTION:Abhainn Studio & October Nights are thrilled to welcome the acclaimed US singer Josephine Foster to Enniscrone\, as part of an Irish tour. \nJosephine Foster (b. 1974) is a North American artist celebrated as a singer\, multi-instrumentalist\, and composer. Her voice seems to drift from another time. Her music carries the soul of old folk songs\, operatic hymns\, and blues\, yet moves freely\, like a dream half-remembered. \nBorn in Colorado\, she sang in a log cabin church as a girl before setting out on the road\, collecting songs and stories along the way. In her twenties\, Foster immersed herself in Chicago’s experimental rock and free jazz scene\, shedding remnants of her early operatic ambitions. A transatlantic move followed\, leading her to rural Spain\, where she spent over a decade honing her craft. \nLater\, stints in Nashville’s recording studios further shaped her prolific career\, resulting in a rich tapestry of solo and band albums. Whether on stage or in the studio\, she has shaped a body of song that mirrors her wandering heart—restless\, soulful\, and unbound. \nPlaying guitar\, piano/organ\, harp\, and autoharp\, Foster moves effortlessly between structure and spontaneity. Her performances feel both intimate and otherworldly\, drawing listeners into a world uniquely her own. \nPress \n‘Domestic Sphere’ album review 9/10 ALBUM OF THE WEEK Loud & Quiet \n“You could be forgiven for thinking that Josephine Foster’s quavering\, sepia-tinted voice is something beamed in from another age. It conjures up images of an older southern woman\, sitting on the porch of a clapboard shack in the years before the civil war\, absent-mindedly singing ancient folksongs”. The Guardian \n‘Her old-timey aesthetic and vocal style hovers somewhere between opera and folk\, earthy and ethereal. Her music is cultivated across a broad range of genres from spirituals\, hymns and lullabies to rhythmic folk and country’ The Wire \nWatch/ Listen \nChild of God \nHaunted House \nJosephine Foster interview \nSocial Media \nJosephine Foster Instagram \nFire Records \nAbhainn Studio Instagram \nOctober Nights Instagram \nIrish Tour 2025 \nJune 6th / Bello Bar\, Dublin (Presented by Foggy Notions) \nJune 7th / Abhainn Studio\, Enniscrone\, Co Sligo \nJune 8th / Black Box\, Belfast (Presented by Moving On Music) \n(Photo by Javier G. SUMMARY:Derek Warfield & The Young Wolfe Tones
DESCRIPTION:A special group of Irish men and women have been responsible for preservation of the tradition of Irish ballad singing over the past 50 years. Derek Warfield is a distinguished name among them. Derek Warfield and They Young Wolfe Tones are bringing that musical tradition forward with a reverence for Ireland’s past and the energy and optimism of a new generation of Irish musicians. \nIn 2001\, after nearly 40 years performing\, the legendary Wolfe Tones parted with their founder and leader – Derek Warfield. No other Irish folk group\, before or since\, told the story of Ireland so completely and unapologetically. But for Derek’s hunger and desire to continue to further the story of Ireland through song\, an ancient tradition might have lost perhaps its most iconic figure. In 2005 Derek put together a band containing some of the finest musicians and singers in Irish music – The Young Wolfe Tones. \nDerek Warfield’s 50 years of experience coupled with the talent and energy of The Young Wolfe Tones brings the old tradition of Irish balladry into a new age. The story of Ireland is transmitted in their music and song and illuminated by the outstanding musicianship of three wonderful ambassadors of a new generation of traditional players. Derek Warfield and The Young Wolfe Tones deliver Ireland’s traditional music and folk songs with an energy and skill that shows the quality of contemporaries within that tradition. The patriotic spirit of Irish music carried through the 1970s\, 1980s and 1990s by the Wolfe Tones now marches on in the dynamic sound of The Young Wolfe Tones.

SUMMARY:An Evening of Music by Ryuichi Sakamoto Curated and performed by Ruth McGinley
DESCRIPTION:“Art is long… Life is short” \nAN EVENING OF MUSIC BY RYUICHI SAKAMOTO CURATED AND PERFORMED BY RUTH MCGINLEY. \nComposer\, pianist\, record producer\, and actor Ryuichi Sakamoto is perhaps best known for the score of the 1983 movie Merry Christmas\, Mr Lawrence which starred David Bowie. \n“As a music maker and curious explorer of the inner human experience\, Sakamoto’s life and work offers the gift of limitless inspiration. Playing his music is like looking deeply into your own soul…a profound experience.” \nContemplating his mortality in 2017\, Sakamoto said he wanted to make “music I won’t be ashamed to leave behind – meaningful work”. By any metric\, he already had. His view of himself was perpetually in flux. He had become interested in human playing through this circuitous route of the sampler: “I discovered something new about the piano.” \nThe significance of this return to the piano became increasingly apparent as his career moved from youthful pop star to chameleonic mature artist; the piano became an instrument at the centre of personal freedom\, rather than an archaic evolutionary stage leading to the synthesizer. And now\, what can we say\, he showed us music is never really about certainty\, only possibility\, and in possibility there is a way to live\, a positivity that Ryuichi Sakamoto never abandoned. \nDerry-born Ruth McGinley is widely recognised as one of Ireland’s leading pianists. Her career has been wide-ranging and daring\, collaborating with some of the most acclaimed musicians working today\, and straying from the typical classical-pianist journey. But it is perhaps the spaces between where Ruth’s interests really lie. A determination to walk her own path\, Ruth’s love of music goes far beyond the classical world. A highly sought-after collaborator\, Ruth loves to cross musical boundaries and work with musicians from a diverse range of backgrounds including jazz\, folk\, electronic and film. \nMatthew Nolan is a Dublin based musician\, composer\, academic and curator. He has produced new work in collaboration with some of the finest musicians around\, both Irish and international. He has worked on commissions from a range of prestigious performing arts institutions\, including National Gallery of Ireland\, BAM and Film at Lincoln Centre in New York\, The National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C.\, Kilkenny Arts Festival\, Bram Stoker Festival\, and the Saint Patrick’s Festival. His most recent projects were presented at MoLI in Dublin as part of their Ulysses centenary project and at the New York Film Festival filled up. 2024 will see the release of Pomes Penyeach by Universal Music\, produced in collaboration with Adrian Crowley and based on James Joyce’s short book of poetry.

She struggles with the cost of living and the rising price of Prosecco\, whilst trying to survive on Universal Credit.\n She can’t even afford a night out. So every Thursday night she and her wee christian friend\, Mary Magdalene Miriam\, doll themselves up and have a wee drink and listen to Lana’s mother’s music from the 1950s and 60s.
