DESCRIPTION:Set along the sweeping Atlantic shoreline\, the Black Pig Festival is the heartbeat of summer in the seaside village of Enniscrone\, drawing locals and visitors together each year for a lively celebration of community\, culture and coastal life. The festival takes its name from the legendary Black Pig of Muckdubh\, a mythical wild boar said to have rampaged from Donegal to Enniscrone before finally being slain by locals. According to folklore\, the creature was so enormous it had to be buried beneath a mound of earth\, giving the area its name and inspiring a tradition that lives on today. \nWhile its origins lie in myth\, the modern festival is anything but dark. It is a joyful\, energetic event that reflects the spirit of the town itself. Across several days\, Enniscrone comes alive with open-air concerts\, beach activities\, funfairs and community events. From sandcastle competitions and heritage walks to triathlons\, live music and fireworks over Killala Bay\, there is a strong sense of inclusivity\, with something for every age group. \nFood also plays a central role\, with events like the “Taste of Enniscrone” bringing together local producers and showcasing the best of the region’s flavours. Combined with the Atlantic backdrop and long summer evenings\, it creates a festival atmosphere that feels both relaxed and electric at the same time. \nUltimately\, the Black Pig Festival is more than an annual event. It is a celebration of storytelling\, place and people\, where ancient legend meets modern coastal life\, and where a small Sligo village opens itself up to the world in a uniquely warm and memorable way.

DESCRIPTION:Castle 2 Cave Camino 2026 returns for it 5th year and takes places on Saturday 18th April! \nThis is a looped 34K Camino set in the heart of south east County Sligo.. \nStarting in Knockoconnor Keash this route has breath taking views along historical trail roads taking in the Caves of Keash\, Templevanny\, Corricknahorna\, Aughanagh\, Ballinafad \, Bunnadubber\, Limnagh Bog\, then crossing over the R295 and continuing over by Derrygola\, Dernaskeagh\, on to Toomour\, Daughloonagh before getting back to base. \nAll of these locations are steeped in history\, folklore myths and legends which we will share with you over the coming weeks. There are spectacular views over the landscape of county Sligo from the back of Ceis Chorainn on to Templevanney with assent and decent views over Lough Arrow\, Ballinafad Village and Ballinafad Castle also the Curlieu Mountains are running in close proximity to the famed Carrowkeel Megalithic Tombs. \nAlong with our 3 official water stops\, you can stop off at the Community Café in Ballinafad at the half way mark for refreshments before you head off again passing the Red Earls Road and taking the assent towards Limnagh Bog awash with flower and fawnagh and much wildlife\, Squirrels \, Pine Martens\, Jay Birds\, ducks and if you really observant some wild deer to mention a few. These wild animals will compliment the local docile sheep\, cows\, horses and donkeys together with their young that you would expect to see in mid April. Then you arrive back to Knockoconnor and the Eastern Harps GAA clubhouse for a hot meal. \nWe can provide changing rooms along with hot showers to all participants. We will present all participants with souvenirs of their day and if you have the energy you can round off the day with music and different beverages to suit all taste buds. \nThere is also an option of completing a shorter 21km looped route covering much of the same route as the 34km.

DESCRIPTION:Don your Christmas jumpers and Santa hats and let’s get lit for another Sligo Glow Walk – and this time\, it’s Christmas! \nSligo Glow Walk is back – and this time\, it’s Christmas! \nThe Christmas Glow Walk is a family-friendly\, Christmas-themed Glow-in-the-Dark walk over a 3km route in Sligo Town. Dress to impress and bring your furry friends! \nLet’s make Sligo glow! Starting at 6:45pm from Queen Maeve Square (next to Sligo on Ice)\, the walk will head proceed to Doorly Park Playground. The walk will then return to Queen Maeve Square along the same route. \nThe Christmas Glow Walk is free\, open to all ages\, and dog-friendly. Walkers are encouraged to dress in their brightest\, most glowing Christmas-themed attired. There will also be a limited supply of Christmas glow-in-the-dark goodies available before the walk\, free of charge\, to those who want to accessorise to the max! First come\, first served! \nTickets are free – get yours here and get the latest updates on the walk. You can also simply turn up on the evening and register onsite. \nThis event is grant-funded via a partnership between Sligo BID and Sligo County Council. This grant is funded through the Department of Culture\, Communications and Sport (Previously called the Department of Arts\, Culture\, Communications\, Media and Sports) Night Time Economy Pilot for Sligo Town. \nPlease note\, all u-16s must be accompanied by a responsible adult and all dogs/cat/assorted furry creatures must be leashed for the duration of the walk. No Grinches allowed!

DESCRIPTION:Ballymote Heritage Weekend – August bank holiday 2025 information\n* lectures to begin at 8:00 pm \nSchedule: \n⁃ Friday 1st August – Deirdre McGuirk – The Michael Davitt Museum: Conserving a Legacy\n⁃ Sat 2nd August – John McCarrick – The changing role of co-ops in a changing world and the place of Sligo’s co-op tradition\n⁃ Sun 3rd August – Sam Moore and Fiona Beglane – The Green Fort Archaeology Project: Research into Sligo town’s bastioned artillery fort\n⁃ Monday 4th August – There will be a guided tour of Sligo Abbey on Monday\, August 4th. The tour starts at 1pm sharp and will last for 45 minutes. Cost is €4 per person. Starts at the Abbey gate. \n⁃ Sunday 24th August – John Coleman\, M. Litt.\, historian\, Ballymote native & resident leads a walking tour of Ballymote “Ballymote Heritage Town: A walking tour drawing attention to important buildings and street development from the medieval to the modern.” Meets at the front of the castle @ 3:30 pm. \nSpeakers: \nJohn McCarrick – A native of South Sligo John McCarrick Economist and Accountant was Director General of ICOS the coordinating body for Co-ops in Ireland 1978-1983 and since worked as a co-op expert in over 40 countries. \nSam Moore – Sam Moore is a faculty member in archaeology at the Atlantic Technological University\, Sligo\, and his main research focus is on the Carrowkeel/Keshcorran passage tomb complex in Co. Sligo. Sam is also a member of the Green Fort Archaeology Project and the Green Fort Working Group. \nDeirdre McGuirk – Deirdre McGuirk is the Curator of the Michael Davitt Museum.  Deirdre holds an MA in Public History and Cultural Heritage from the University of Limerick and has worked in Cultural Institutions in both Dublin and Mayo.  The Michael Davitt Museum is based in Straide in Co Mayo and holds the Museum Standard Programme for Ireland accreditation. This year the museum was awarded a grant by The Heritage Council to carry out a conservation survey on its collection.  Deirdre will present a talk on the processes of protecting such a valuable collection. \nFiona Beglane – Dr Fiona Beglane is a Lecturer of Archaeology at ATU Sligo. Her main areas of research include zooarchaeology\, scientific approaches to archaeology\, and medieval and post-medieval ecclesiastical sites and landscapes. \n \n  \nFounded on May 30th 1984\, Ballymote Heritage Group Co.Sligo is now more than a quarter century in existence. Since that date it has met without fail each month and has continued to devote itself to its stated aim of raising awareness of all matters of Heritage and in particular promoting knowledge of and interest in all aspects of local history\, archaeology\, culture\, folklore and all the many things that make up the unique character of any given area. \nHighlights of its activities include the Ballymote Heritage Weekend which has taken place each year since 1990 at the August Bank Holiday and The Corran Herald published each year since 1985. The Ballymote Heritage Weekend continues to attract audiences from near and far and has been widely praised for the high quality of its lectures and outings. The Corran Herald has developed a unique blend of styles and subjects and continues to hold the interest of its increasing readership from year to year.
