SUMMARY:The Red Dress Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:In a landmark moment for Sligo and Ireland\, The Red Dress Embroidery Project will make its first visit to Ireland as part of the launch celebrations of Sligo PEACEPLUS. \nIt will be shown at City Hall\, Sligo from Monday 12th May to Thursday 15th May. Admission is free. Exhibition times as follows: \n\nMonday 12th May 10:00am – 5:00pm\nTuesday 13th May: 9:00am – 5:00pm\nWednesday 14th May: 9:00am – 5:00pm\nThursday 15th May: Private viewing: 9:00am – 2:00pm/ Open viewing: 2:00pm – 5:00pm\n\nThe award-winning Red Dress has 87 panels embroidered over 14 years by 380 people in 51 countries\, including Ireland. Artist\, Kirstie McLeod initially sought to unite people globally across borders and boundaries with the concept. However\, as it evolved\, The Red Dress became a platform for self-expression and an opportunity for marginalised voices to be amplified\, and prompting conversations on important and frequently uncomfortable issues: a perfect match for the outcomes of Sligo PEACEPLUS Co-designed Local Community Peace Action Plan. \nThe Sligo PEACEPLUS Action Plan was developed in co-design consultation. It is made up of 15 projects across three themes that seek to enhance community integration and cohesion. PEACEPLUS\, a programme managed by the Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB) has awarded funding\, of €3.604 Million has been awarded to support the Plan which implements a diverse range of projects that address local challenges and promote peace and prosperity across County Sligo and with cross-border participation from now until the end of summer 2028. \nThe projects which will span the entire county will use activities\, including sports\, art\, podcasting\, technology\, history\, music\, fashion\, biodiversity and the circular economy\, to involve communities marginalised by geography\, race\, ability\, gender\, sexuality\, religion\, age\, disadvantage\, and having conflict legacy. It is in this way\, exhibiting the Red Dress speaks to participation and what can be achieved over time when groups come together. The exhibit will be supplemented by a local project to decorate a calico cloak for Sligo PEACEPLUS. \nFor more information on the Red Dress for Sligo PEACEPLUS and the various projects that people can get involved in\, check out www.sligococo.ie /peace or email peace@sligococo.ie . \n\nThe Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB) is a North South Body with the statutory remit for managing EU funding programmes within Northern Ireland and the border counties of Ireland.\nPEACEPLUS is a cross-border funding Programme designed to support peace and prosperity across Northern Ireland and the border counties of Ireland. The total value of PEACEPLUS is €1.14 billion.\nPEACEPLUS is co-funded by the European Union\, the Government of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland\, the Government of Ireland\, and the Northern Ireland Executive.\nFor more information on the artist and the Red Dress Project\, please visit https://reddressembroidery.com/

SUMMARY:Seven Letters
DESCRIPTION:Seven Letters is a heartfelt tribute to the everyday women who navigate life carrying the weight of memories on their hearts. These women have faced love\, abandonment\, hope\, and heartbreak\, yet they persist\, often finding strength through wit and laughter. The play poignantly reminds us that while our youth slips away too quickly\, the passage of time can sometimes feel interminable.

DESCRIPTION:Medb’s Dragon Warriors\, with the support of Power to Change\, will host the Uisce Álainn Event on the Garavogue River and Lough Gill on Saturday\, 3rd May 2025. \nThe event will open with the Awakening the Dragon and Dotting of the Eye Ceremony followed by a commemorative Flower Ceremony. \nThe Awakening of the Dragon Ceremony\, an ancient Chinese custom\, will open the dragon’s eyes\, ward off evil spirits and prepare the river for voyage. SUMMARY:Marianne Keating; No Irish Need Apply
DESCRIPTION:Sat. 19 Apr. – Sat. 21 Jun. 2025 \nThe Model is delighted to present a new film work by the artist\, Marianne Keating\, entitled No Irish Need Apply\, which has been commissioned by The Model especially for The Niland Collection. This single-channel film examines the realities of Irish migration to England during the twentieth century. \nThe Irish experience in Britain during the 1970s and 1980s was profoundly shaped by the political violence of the Troubles\, and the resulting anti-Irish sentiment that was widespread within the British government and media. This period saw an entire Irish immigrant community\, many of whom had settled in post-war Britain to build lives and contribute to society\, targeted by restrictive legislation\, denied social welfare benefits\, and subjected to discrimination. \nWhen British rule in southern Ireland ended in 1922\, the lack of a robust industrial base created an unsustainable economic situation\, forcing thousands of Irish citizens to seek new employment opportunities in Britain. The designation of the “special relationship” between the Republic of Ireland and the United Kingdom\, allowed free movement of Irish citizens to the UK\, but was in itself a remnant of the colonial era. This arrangement\, while seemingly beneficial for Irish migrants\, also served colonial interests. British Cabinet Papers from 1955 reveal that maintaining the flow of Irish labour was necessary to support the continued development of the UK economy. \nBy the late 1970s\, the Irish formed the largest immigrant community in London. The escalation of the war in Northern Ireland and the IRA bombing campaign in mainland Britain led to increased tensions for the Irish community\, and the Brent Irish Advisory Service (BIAS) was established in 1978\, followed in 1981 by Irish in Britain Representation Group (IBRG)\, to support their welfare needs. \nThe Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) was rushed through British Parliament in 1974 following the Guildford and Birmingham pub bombings. This act granted sweeping powers to law enforcement\, and was often used to target innocent Irish individuals. Under this legislation\, Irish people were subjected to arbitrary arrests\, extended detentions without charge\, and exclusion from Britain without legal recourse. Such measures facilitated mass surveillance and reinforced stereotypes that cast suspicion on the entire Irish community. Everyday life became fraught with fear as Irish accents alone could provoke verbal abuse\, physical assault\, or even denial of service in shops and workplaces. \nThis systemic prejudice extended beyond public policy into social attitudes. Irish-owned businesses and homes were targeted with violence\, and many people avoided Irish Centres and pubs out of fear of victimisation. The quashing of the convictions of the Guildford Four in 1990 and the Birmingham Six in 1991 finally exposed the injustices faced by the Irish in Britain\, forcing a reckoning with the oppressive policies and prejudice that had silenced a vibrant community for decades. These revelations marked a turning point in reclaiming dignity and challenging anti-Irish racism. \nMarianne Keating is an Irish artist and researcher\, based in London. She has a practice-based PhD in Visual & Material Culture and Contemporary Art Practice entitled\, ‘They don’t do much in the cane-hole way’\, Hidden Histories of the Irish Diaspora in Jamaica\, from Kingston University\, London. She is currently an Associate Lecturer at the Royal College of Art\, London. Keating was shortlisted to represent Ireland at the 2022 Venice Biennial and has exhibited extensively throughout Ireland and internationally. In 2023\, Keating’s new work An Ciúnas / The Silence was exhibited at the Showroom Gallery in London\, and in 2024\, it toured to selected venues in Ireland. Upcoming exhibitions and new commissions in 2025 include a newly commissioned multi-screen work for The Irish Pavilion\, at the World Expo\, Japan; and a solo show at The Royal Hibernian Academy\, Dublin. \nNo Irish Need Apply has been made possible through an Arts Council Bursary Award. It has been acquired by the Graeve Collection\, which is on long-term loan to the Niland Collection. \nThe exhibition continues until Sat. 21 Jun. 2025

SUMMARY:Julianknxx; Chorus in Rememory of Flight
DESCRIPTION:Tue. 15 Apr. – Sat. 21 Jun. 2025 \n12 – 3pm | Exhibition Preview\n3 – 4pm | Julianknxx in conversation with writer and creative producer\, Debo Amon\n4 – 5pm | Drinks Reception \nThe Model is delighted to present Chorus in Rememory of Flight\, an immersive multi-screen film installation\, across six gallery spaces\, by one of the UK’s most exciting artists\, Julianknxx. \nInspired by the words of philosopher Édouard Glissant\, ‘you can change with the Other while being yourself\, you are not one\, you are multiple\, and you are yourself’; this major work is borne out of a year in which Julianknxx travelled to cities across Europe to locate and collaborate with ex-patriot African communities. Through a practice of active listening\, he has collected the performances and testimonies of singers\, poets\, choirs\, politicians\, dancers\, activists and leading figures from Black communities\, to create a series of films that reflect on the chorus as a means of resistance to the eradication of difference. \nFilmed in Hamburg\, Berlin\, Amsterdam\, Rotterdam\, Antwerp\, London\, Marseille\, Barcelona and Lisbon\, the project charts a staggering 4000 kilometres in total. These vast distances offer a reflection on the many miles traversed by those interviewed and by their ancestors throughout history. A single refrain – ‘we are what’s left of us’ – binds the choral voices together\, speaking to the ways in which music can be a vital conduit for the survival of cultural memory. \nJulianknxx’s films encourage new perspectives on what it means to be caught between multiple histories and places\, offering up the choir as a metaphor for community. Culminating in an area for reading and reflection\, the exhibition emphasises the importance of listening and engaging in alternative ways of telling the stories that have shaped our cultural identities. The polyphonic nature of Julianknxx’s work is indicative of the artist’s expansive practice\, which is rooted in poetry but extends into performance\, film\, music and sculpture. Born in Freetown\, Sierra Leone\, he draws on his personal experiences to broaden perspectives on the history and culture of Africa and its diasporas. \nIn casting his own practice as a ‘living archive’ or a ‘history from below’\, Julianknxx draws on West African traditions of oral history to reframe how we construct both local and global perspectives. He does this through a body of work that challenges fixed ideas of identity and unravels linear Western historical and socio-political narratives\, attempting to reconcile how it feels to exist primarily in liminal spaces. \nJulianknxx has exhibited widely in the UK and internationally\, including solo exhibitions at CAM\, Lisbon\, 2025; the Barbican\, London\, 2023; Foley Gallery\, New York\, 2022; and 180\, The Strand\, London\, 2021. His work has been shown in group exhibitions at Tate Modern\, the Whitechapel Gallery\, and the Gagosian amongst many other galleries. \nImages\nImage credits: Julianknxx; Chorus in Rememory of Flight\, installation view\, Barbican Art Gallery (c) Eva Herzog & Barbican Art Gallery.

SUMMARY:Derek Warfield & The Young Wolfe Tones
DESCRIPTION:A special group of Irish men and women have been responsible for preservation of the tradition of Irish ballad singing over the past 50 years. Derek Warfield is a distinguished name among them. Derek Warfield and They Young Wolfe Tones are bringing that musical tradition forward with a reverence for Ireland’s past and the energy and optimism of a new generation of Irish musicians. \nIn 2001\, after nearly 40 years performing\, the legendary Wolfe Tones parted with their founder and leader – Derek Warfield. No other Irish folk group\, before or since\, told the story of Ireland so completely and unapologetically. But for Derek’s hunger and desire to continue to further the story of Ireland through song\, an ancient tradition might have lost perhaps its most iconic figure. In 2005 Derek put together a band containing some of the finest musicians and singers in Irish music – The Young Wolfe Tones. \nDerek Warfield’s 50 years of experience coupled with the talent and energy of The Young Wolfe Tones brings the old tradition of Irish balladry into a new age. The story of Ireland is transmitted in their music and song and illuminated by the outstanding musicianship of three wonderful ambassadors of a new generation of traditional players. Derek Warfield and The Young Wolfe Tones deliver Ireland’s traditional music and folk songs with an energy and skill that shows the quality of contemporaries within that tradition. The patriotic spirit of Irish music carried through the 1970s\, 1980s and 1990s by the Wolfe Tones now marches on in the dynamic sound of The Young Wolfe Tones.

SUMMARY:An Evening of Music by Ryuichi Sakamoto Curated and performed by Ruth McGinley
DESCRIPTION:“Art is long… Life is short” \nAN EVENING OF MUSIC BY RYUICHI SAKAMOTO CURATED AND PERFORMED BY RUTH MCGINLEY. \nComposer\, pianist\, record producer\, and actor Ryuichi Sakamoto is perhaps best known for the score of the 1983 movie Merry Christmas\, Mr Lawrence which starred David Bowie. \n“As a music maker and curious explorer of the inner human experience\, Sakamoto’s life and work offers the gift of limitless inspiration. Playing his music is like looking deeply into your own soul…a profound experience.” \nContemplating his mortality in 2017\, Sakamoto said he wanted to make “music I won’t be ashamed to leave behind – meaningful work”. By any metric\, he already had. His view of himself was perpetually in flux. He had become interested in human playing through this circuitous route of the sampler: “I discovered something new about the piano.” \nThe significance of this return to the piano became increasingly apparent as his career moved from youthful pop star to chameleonic mature artist; the piano became an instrument at the centre of personal freedom\, rather than an archaic evolutionary stage leading to the synthesizer. And now\, what can we say\, he showed us music is never really about certainty\, only possibility\, and in possibility there is a way to live\, a positivity that Ryuichi Sakamoto never abandoned. \nDerry-born Ruth McGinley is widely recognised as one of Ireland’s leading pianists. Her career has been wide-ranging and daring\, collaborating with some of the most acclaimed musicians working today\, and straying from the typical classical-pianist journey. But it is perhaps the spaces between where Ruth’s interests really lie. A determination to walk her own path\, Ruth’s love of music goes far beyond the classical world. A highly sought-after collaborator\, Ruth loves to cross musical boundaries and work with musicians from a diverse range of backgrounds including jazz\, folk\, electronic and film. \nMatthew Nolan is a Dublin based musician\, composer\, academic and curator. He has produced new work in collaboration with some of the finest musicians around\, both Irish and international. He has worked on commissions from a range of prestigious performing arts institutions\, including National Gallery of Ireland\, BAM and Film at Lincoln Centre in New York\, The National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C.\, Kilkenny Arts Festival\, Bram Stoker Festival\, and the Saint Patrick’s Festival. His most recent projects were presented at MoLI in Dublin as part of their Ulysses centenary project and at the New York Film Festival filled up. 2024 will see the release of Pomes Penyeach by Universal Music\, produced in collaboration with Adrian Crowley and based on James Joyce’s short book of poetry.
