SUMMARY:Sligo GAA - Gaelic Football
DESCRIPTION:Gaelic Football is a distinctly Irish field invasion game played with a round football which can be caught\, kicked and hand passed. You can come and see the very best players in Sligo do their thing at Markievicz Park in Sligo town. \nThe home 2025 fixtures in the National League Div 3 Gaelic Football are: \n\n2nd February v Kildare\n23rd February v Clare\n23rd March v Leitrim\n\nEquipment \nThe ball used in Gaelic Football is round\, slightly smaller than a soccer ball. \nPlaying Rules \nThe ball can be carried in the hand for a distance of four steps and can be kicked or “hand-passed”\, a striking motion with the hand or fist. After every four steps the ball must be either bounced or “solo-ed”\, an action of dropping the ball onto the foot and kicking it back into the hand. You may not bounce the ball twice in a row. Players may contest for the ball by playing it with the hand or by shoulder charging an opponent side-to-side. \nScoring \nTo score\, you put the ball over the crossbar by foot or fist for one point or under the crossbar and into the net by foot or the hand / fist in certain circumstances for a goal\, the latter being the equivalent of three points. \nA goal is signalled by raising a green flag and a point is signalled by raising a white flag. \nOfficiating \nOfficials for a game comprise of a referee\, two linesmen (to indicate when the ball leaves the field of play at the side and to mark ’45’ free kicks and four umpires (to signal scores\, assist the referee in controlling the games\, and to assist linesmen in positioning ’45’ frees).

SUMMARY:Fledermaus
DESCRIPTION:Man-about-town Eisenstein is supposed to report to jail\, his wife Rosalinde will stay home for the night and their maid Adele needs to visit a sick aunt. Yet all three turn up in disguise at Count Orlofsky’s extravagant masked ball. The champagne flows as the waltzes play. Mistaken identities and heavy flirting lead to a night\, and an early morning\, of hilarity.\n Famous for his “The Blue Danube” waltz\, Fledermaus is Johann Strauss’ most popular opera. Best-known for its tunefulness\, upbeat musicality and Viennese lilt\, the story has hilarious twists and turns\, with disguises\, double crossings and rivers of champagne. \n Fledermaus showcases outstanding Irish vocal talent with sopranos Jade Phoenix and Sarah Shine as Rosalinde and her maid Adele\, and mezzo-soprano Sharon Carty as Prince Orlofsky. American tenor Alex McKissick sings Eisenstein and baritone Ben McAteer (Don Pasquale 2023) is Dr Falke. The ensemble cast also includes soprano Megan O’Neill and tenors Aaron O’Hare and William Pearson. Fledermaus is conducted by Richard Peirson and directed Davey Kelleher\, with set design by Paul O’Mahony\, costume design by Catherine Fay and lighting design by Sinead McKenna. \n Fledermaus is sung in German with English subtitles.

SUMMARY:Sligo GAA - Senior Hurling
DESCRIPTION:Hurling is one of the oldest field games in the world and has been popular for at least 3000 years in Ireland with the first literary reference dating back to 1272 BC. \nYou can see this amazing game for yourself throughout Sligo but the main matches involving the best players in the county take place at the Sligo GAA ground called Markievicz Park. \nThe home 2025 fixtures in the National League Div 3 are: \n\n26th Jan v Wicklow\n9th February v Mayo\n2nd March v Armagh\n\nHurling is often referenced in Irish myths and legends\, the most famous of which has to be the early account found in the Táin Bo Cuailgne\, a legendary tale from early Irish literature\, which describes the exploits of the Ulster hero Cú Chullainn\, (literally Hound of Cullen) who was so named after killing a fierce guard dog by driving a hurling ball down its throat. Such stories often portray Hurling as a form of martial training and proficiency on the Hurling field was equated with skill in battle. Throughout the countryside\, Hurling thrived as a wild and often violent practice with few set rules. One 17th century account describes the game as being played on a plain about 200-300 yards long\, with victory going to the first team to drive the ball through the goal of the opponent. \nThe Celtic legal system\, the Brehon Laws\, provided for compensation for hurling accidents and provisions were also made for cases of deliberate injury\, or even death\, as a result of Hurling. The game was outlawed in the 12th century after the occupation by the Normans\, but it survived and even flourished up to the early 19th century mainly due to patronization by the landlords. \nBy the time of the Great Famine of 1846 – 49\, Hurling had declined dramatically and was in danger of dying out completely but for a number of strongholds. However\, Dublin Castle itself admitted that by the late 1850s\, Hurling was being played all over Munster and records of the game survive in Donegal and Down and Kilkenny and Longford. \nThere was much variation in the forms of the stick and ball games played in Ireland. There was the cross country scuaib in Clare and South Galway. The Camán (anglicized to commons) game was played due north of the Dublin Galway railway line and epicentred in Ulster’s communal heartlands. There was also the Iomán form of the Hurling that was regulated by the Killimor Daly rules of south Galway and the more obscure local rules drafted by James Maher of Tipperary before the famine. \nThe 19th century saw a new version of Hurling\, or hurley as it was referred to\, become popular within the upper classes. A defining ten year period for Hurling was before the establishment of the Gaelic Athletic Association in 1884. By 1879\, there were at least six hurley clubs among the gentry in Dublin\, and the Irish Hurley Union was founded in Trinity College. It was exclusively an upper-class preserve and bore little relation to traditional concepts of the game. During this period\, the various forms of the game all metamorphosed into the first nationally codified sport of Hurling\, which was in essence\, the summer game of Leinster and the South. Camán\, the ground Hurling winter game which according to mid-nineteenth century accounts had been more widespread and popular within Ireland than its younger Hurling sibling\, was to fade away\, even in Ulster where it had been played for generations. \nA clareman named Michael Cusack had realised the need for common regulations and this inspired much of his thinking with regard to the formation of the GAA. In order to preserve the game of Hurling\, Cusack had begun writing about its revival in 1882 in a newspaper *The Illustrated Sporting and Dramatic News *and in 1884 the GAA was founded to restore the Gaelic pastimes of old. \nSince the foundation of the GAA in 1884 and the introduction of a formal set of rules\, the game of Hurling has evolved to the game we see today. The original core concept of man-on man (or woman-on-woman) contests for the ball within the defined framework of a positional game has been added to and eroded to varying degrees over time. \nThe physical conditioning of the modern player has allowed him to move quickly into space to gain possession of the ball\, in many cases uncontested\, while a focus on maintaining possession has resulted in the movement of the ball in a more designed manner\, giving clear advantage to a team mate. This latter trend has also resulted in the reduction in frequency of use of many of the less controllable skills of both games\, for example\, the overhead strike in Hurling\, as the use of these may often lead to a more equal contest or the loss of possession altogether. The focus on maintaining possession once you have it has antagonistically resulted in the adoption of defensive tactics designed to concentrate players in front of the scoring area or around the ball when not in possession. \nWhile there is much debate about the value of such tactics to both games\, modern coaches seek to position their players against opponents they perceive to have advantages over – whether in the contest or once in possession – maintaining the dramatic combat or duel concept of the games. All the while tactical innovation is sought from far and wide to overcome those of their opponents\, and improve their team’s chances of winning. \nHurling has also been exposed to the influence of external sources\, particularly through the international games played between Hurlers of Ireland and their Scottish Shinty counterparts. The game is played under ‘compromise’ rules agreed between the governing associations and provide an opportunity for players to represent their country in a series of international tests from time to time.

SUMMARY:Christine Mackey: Seeking to walk beautifully on the earth
DESCRIPTION:Earth’s skin is not one soil but many soils. Each has its own story. Soils are active. They are born. They age. They breathe. Soils are in a state of constant change in cycles with no beginning and no end. We are the custodians of this living organism\, earth’s green mantle. \nThis opening statement by the artist Christine Mackey sets the stage for her solo exhibition\, Seeking to walk beautifully on the earth\, which opens at The Model on Sat. 1 February. \nMackey’s artistic practice is one of profound stewardship\, observation and care for the environment\, and is deeply rooted in site-specific land and marine-based work. Seasonal processes range from collecting seeds\, to weaving floating islands\, to nourishing native tree saplings\, to the cultivation of waste ground. \nSeeking to walk beautifully on the earth is accompanied by a unique series of mini residencies undertaken by invited multi-disciplinary artists whose work resonates with Mackey’s practice. Each artist-in-residence will present free workshops over six weeks throughout February and March\, offering members of the public and invited groups the opportunity to explore a range of concepts and techniques from mycology\, world-building\, weaving\, making dyes and pigments\, to story-telling and illustration. \nMackey’s exhibition is particularly relevant today\, as it resonates with urgent issues of biodiversity loss\, species extinction\, energy crises\, and habitat destruction\, while at the same time highlighting positive themes of renewal\, awareness\, and change. \nThe works are assembled as a series of chapters rooted in key locations. Huddle began as a public seed planting exercise in Wexford to explore the habitat of native bees. It looks at the way in which wild pollinators are under threat from pollution and adverse changes to the climate. Auction is an experimental docu-style video that documents Mackey’s residency at a kelp farm in South Korea. This work visualizes the implications of industrial-scale seaweed farming on the local marine environment and on migratory communities. This experience prompted Mackey to develop several large-scale hybrid drawings of aquatic plants that are sewn in sections utilizing a Korean technique to make wrapping cloth from waste material. \nBoils\, Bitters\, and Scores is a unique artist’s book that reflects Mackey’s long-term engagement with biological narratives\, where the distinct voice of each plant is conveyed through their words and realized in their pigments. \nThe variable materials and processes used in this exhibition activate new ideas related to site\, agency and ecology which opens a myriad of conversation on the fragility of earths systems. \nWorkshops with the invited artists can be booked here. The exhibition continues until 22 March.
