SUMMARY:The Mulcahy Family
DESCRIPTION:The Mulcahy Family live in concert in the Coleman Music Centre\, Gurteen\, Co Sligo F56 TF88 on Saturday\, 9th November at 8pm. \nTickets €15. To book call:071 9182599 or book online at www.colemanirishmusic.com \nWhen the Mulcahy Family\, of Abbeyfeale\, West Limerick are involved the music is never ordinary and always close to the heart. That is the hallmark of the Mulcahy Family\, as the simplicity of the tunes takes on a new life when blended together with technique and familiarity all wrapped together in honesty and respect for the tradition. \nThat respect flows from the Mick Mulcahy\, 63\, originally from Brosna\, Co. Kerry where proximity to Sliabh Luachra and Co. Clare assured a firm foundation for the music. A member of the senior All-Ireland Brosna Ceili Band who won the gold in Listowel in 1972\, he is a devoted musician all his life seeking out the best sessions and musicians. \nExposure to the likes of trad icons Willie Clancy and Seamus Ennis at August bank holiday weekends in Miltown Malbay set the tone and bar very high in the 1950s and 1960s for traditional music and on Mulcahy’s own development. When he and his wife\, Cecelia\, settled in Abbeyfeale to raise their family consisting of daughters Louise\, 26\, and Michelle\, 24\, it was clear that Irish music would be the family passion and cultural sustenance. \nAs infants\, the girls were regular visitors to the annual Willie Clancy Summer School and All-Ireland fleadhs\, later to be students and then teachers. \nTheir skill-sets on a variety of instruments provide for a tasteful layering on top of the tune that reveals their own sensitivity and natural flair for traditional music. Mostly self-taught\, Mick plays a variety of accordions\, concertina and melodeon\, Louise the tin-whistle\, uilleann pipes and primarily the concert flute while Michelle plays the harp\, concertina\, accordion\, fiddle and piano.

SUMMARY:Informal Music Afternoon in November
DESCRIPTION:Informal Music Afternoons are a series of monthly events\, presented in partnership with Sligo Baroque Orchestra\, where an eclectic mix of music is performed in a welcoming format in The Model’s Atrium space. The Informal Music Afternoon is an ideal way to spend a calm Sunday afternoon. The idea behind this event is to make classical music accessible for all\, by means of an informal concert with a relaxed atmosphere in a cafe-style setting. Musicians perform classical works in addition to a non-classical section – often folk\, traditional or jazz. \nÓsta@TheModel will be open from 12 noon serving refreshments and a selection of lite bites. The concerts start at 1pm\, but we recommend coming at 12:30pm so you can enjoy a coffee or a glass of wine from the wonderful café prior.

SUMMARY:Ever Present - Celebrating 100 Years of Art
DESCRIPTION:With opening speech by John Turpin\, President of the Friends of The National Collections of Ireland. \nOn the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the foundation of the Friends of the National Collections of Ireland (FNCI)\, The Model presents a unique selection of artworks gifted to The Niland Collection from the 1960s to the present day. The first of these artworks presented to the Sligo County Library and Museum in 1965 was The Sea and The Lighthouse by Jack B Yeats. Bequeathed to the FNCI by Dorothea Case in 1947\, this work is now a cornerstone of The Niland Collection\, and continues to offer both contemporary and historical narratives to our multi-vocal curatorial vision. \nThe acquisition is also testimony to the vision of Nora Niland\, who played a significant role in attracting such important artworks to help build our collection. Niland follows in the footsteps of other inspirational Irish women\, who dedicated their lives to the development of the visual arts in Ireland\, notably artist Sarah Purser\, who was an active collector of artworks; which she hung in the rooms of her home\, Mespil House in Dublin. Purser regularly hosted artist gatherings in her home and in 1924\, she and a group of friends founded The Friends of the National Collections of Ireland – for the purpose of acquiring works of art and objects of historical interest and donating them to national and regional art galleries and museums throughout Ireland. \nThis exhibition brings together works which are both thought-provoking and contemplative\, and which mirror the thoughts\, subject matter and concerns of artists throughout the twentieth century. \nAll works in this exhibition have been generously gifted to The Niland Collection by the Friends of the National Collections of Ireland. \nImage credit: Barbara Warren (b. 1925); Girl with a Goose\, N.D.\, oil on canvas.

SUMMARY:Jack Butler Yeats; Salt Water Ballads
DESCRIPTION:Jack Butler Yeats (1871-1957) grew up in Sligo\, in the care of his maternal grandparents Elizabeth & William Pollexfen. From an early age\, the young artist was steeped in the rich sea-faring culture of the area\, where the ocean connected a small town on Europe’s western periphery with the enigmatic outside world. Throughout Yeats’ long career as an artist\, this fascination with the drama and mystique of the ocean remained a constant amongst his many abiding artistic themes. \nYeats’ affinity with the sea was shared by his good friend\, the acclaimed poet John Masefield. Masefield had joined the navy aged just 13 years\, and set sail for Chile on his first voyage three years later. Masefield and Jack Yeats bonded over their shared love of art and theatre\, tales of the high seas\, sea-faring vessels and pirate lore. In the summer of 1901\, Masefield holidayed at Yeats’ home in Devon\, where together they fashioned model boats from the rough materials to hand – card board boxes\, tin cans\, stones\, wood and paper\, and sailed them in a nearby stretch of water called the Gara River. During that time\, Yeats and Masefield also collaborated artistically on a rich treasure trove of oceanic drama\, comprised of ballads\, miniature plays and illustrations. Chief amongst the human characters that populated their imaginary sea-themed dreamscape was Theodore\, a cabin boy and the adopted son of the infamous French pirate\, Jean Lafitte. \nIn 2017\, The Niland Collection was gifted a body of work by Jack Butler Yeats\, purchased especially by a private collector. Among these works was a wooden linen chest\, lined with 19 sea-themed watercolour drawings by the artist. Due to their placement on wood and metal\, the drawings had deteriorated somewhat in the 100 years since their creation. In 2020\, The Model secured funds from the Heritage Council for their restoration; and in a process led by Dr Patrick McBride\, one of Ireland’s leading conservators\, each individual work was carefully removed and restored. In an unexpected turn of events\, new works by Yeats were revealed underneath the visible drawings\, including two unseen watercolours\, as well as a number of prints. \nThis exhibition includes the restored watercolours\, as well as the original Linen Chest with replica drawings affixed as the originals were placed. Yeats’ own collection of model and handmade boats\, which were also donated by the same benefactor is also on view. The miniature figure of Theodore\, the Pirate\, with the word ‘help’ written on this back\, was found during the conservation work\, stowed away in the hull of one of the model boats.

SUMMARY:Michele Horrigan; Stigma Damages
DESCRIPTION:Stigma Damages is a solo exhibition by Michele Horrigan\, known for her ongoing investigations into heavy industry in Ireland and the environmental impacts involved in the global production of aluminium. This is Horrigan’s most substantial presentation on the topic to date\, with new video artworks\, unearthed archival documents and found objects placed across five gallery spaces at The Model. \nHorrigan grew up and today lives beside Ireland’s largest industrial complex\, the Rusal Aughinish alumina refinery on the Shannon Estuary. There\, mineral ore bauxite is imported from Guinea in Africa and chemically altered onsite to become aluminium\, used in computer parts and engines\, drink cans\, cars and airplanes\, or kept as a commodity in warehouses across the world to be traded on stock exchanges. Attracted by foreign investment policies and the lax environmental protection regimes of Ireland in the 1970s\, the refinery’s construction created the largest building site in Europe by the banks of the Shannon. Commencement of production saw it lauded as a key success of the Irish state’s economic policy to attract multinational companies and corporate interests to Irish shores. Horrigan’s exhibition focuses on the continuing legacy of operations onsite today – throughout her life she has borne witness to debates in its hinterlands linking the refinery to deformed agricultural livestock\, local health issues\, and toxic deposits. \nThe title of the exhibition\, Stigma Damages – typically used as a legal term to describe suspected environmental contamination – additionally acts for Horrigan as a framework to map and uncover corporate greenwashing strategies of global extraction industries\, and seek restorative justice for land and its people. At Aughinish\, an aging industrial complex releases over 1 million tonnes of carbon each year. Its owners\, Moscow-based Rusal seek to expand existing toxic ‘red mud’ waste dumps around the refinery in size. Since early 2022\, with war in Ukraine\, the Irish government refuse to apply sanctions despite proven links to military forces through its main shareholder. Horrigan notes that Stigma Damages has over time become an ongoing platform to spotlight these harsh realities\, ‘driven in the belief that profound violations of environments and civil rights will be left disavowed and unrecoverable\, from the contamination of ecosystems to exploitation and expulsion of humans.’ \nVideos at The Model feature a detailed overview of the Rusal refinery and often-turbulent public meetings in nearby Askeaton around its future. Further fieldwork by the artist around environmental activism and knowledge-sharing is seen\, as with Horrigan’s work with community organisations in Western Australia that successfully challenge the corporate mandates of alumina refineries outside Perth. Topographical maps\, the artists’ own health tests and a curated selection of objects and documents amassed over fifteen years of research are additionally presented. \nThe exhibition marks the beginning of a series of further developments in Horrigan’s artwork. A new resource website launches at www.stigmadamages.com\, featuring key research\, critical texts and a podcast series to unfold over the next year. A seminar event on Saturday October 12 will feature the artist in conversation with Neal White (Artist and Professor of Art at University of Westminster\, London) Patrick Bresnihan (Associate Professor in the Department of Geography at Maynooth University) and Emanuela Ferrari (Environmental Campaigner with FutureProof Clare and PhD candidate at University College Dublin). \nStigma Damages is additionally funded by the Arts Council Project Award and supported by Eco Showboat\, Community Alliance for Positive Solutions (Western Australia) and Peel Environmental Protection Alliance (Western Australia). \nThe exhibition will continue until Saturday\, 23rd November 2024 at The Model. All openings and exhibitions at The Model are free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Bafushia (a physically bound process of forward movement)
DESCRIPTION:Presented in partnership with Cairde Sligo Arts Festival as part of the Hereditas Project \nParticipating artists: Chloe McDonagh\, Dave McDonagh\, Francesca Hutchinson\, Leanne McDonagh\, Phien O’Phien and Tommy Rhattigan. \nBafushia is a word from the Traveller Cant language that conveys a physically-bound term of forward movement. The exhibition title arose while exploring Jack Butler Yeats images of Travellers with Oein DeBhairduin and participants from the Sligo Traveller Support Group. \nThrough collective interpretation the word was translated from the Yeats drawing ‘Telling the Cards’ (1898)\, where it was written down. In this context Bafushia could also be used as a word for divining the future\, ‘telling forward’\, and for seeking out and imagining what lies ahead. \nThe exhibition consists of contemporary artists who share heritage within the Travelling community. What is important about this selection of artists however is the relevance and criticality of the work that they make. A criticality that is simultaneously rooted in personal experience\, but also advocates for the sharing of diverse knowledge\, experience and reflection. \nThis exhibition is part of the Hereditas Project funded by The Arts Council of Ireland’s Art: 2023 Centenary Programme. \n  \nImage credits: Leanne McDonagh; Rest\, 2011\, Pigment on Hahnemuhle Photo Rag.
