DESCRIPTION:The Office of Public Works (OPW) and the Rose of Innisfree Boat Tours have partnered again this year to offer visitors a unique heritage experience when visiting Parke’s Castle. \nEvery Wednesday from 1 July\, the Rose of Innisfree Boat Tour departs from Doorly Park Jetty\, Sligo at 10:30am\, travelling across Lough Gill to the majestic Parke’s Castle on the Leitrim shore. Once docked\, visitors are welcomed with a guided tour of the castle at 11:30am\, before the boat returns to Sligo at 12:20pm\, arriving back by 1:30pm. Please note that boat charges apply. \n\nThe experience offers a new way to explore the shared cultural story of Sligo and Leitrim including waters associated with W.B. Yeats and the Lake Isle of Innisfree before reaching the 17th-century history of Parke’s Castle. \n\n\n\n\nMinister of State with responsibility for the OPW\, Kevin “Boxer” Moran said “I am delighted to welcome this partnership between the OPW and Rose of Innisfree Boat Tours\, which gives visitors a new and enjoyable way to experience Parke’s Castle every Wednesday. (Click here to see the temporary car park location).\nThe public can access the area directly in front of the ship but please follow all instructions provided by stewards on site.\nIt is recommended that all tickets are purchased online here.\n\n \n \nEl Galeón Andalucía departure information: \nThis beautiful ship will depart Sligo on Monday\, July 13th\, passing Rosses Point at approximately 5:50pm (weather dependent). \nIf you’d like to see this magnificent sight\, we recommend arriving early to secure a good viewing spot. \n*** \nSligo will welcome the spectacular Galeón Andalucía\, the world’s largest replica Spanish galleon\, for a two week visit from 30 June to 13 July 2026. The ship’s arrival marks a major cultural moment for the county and provides an exceptional new visitor experience at the start of the summer holidays. \nWeather permitting\, the Galeón Andalucía will sail into Sligo Harbour on 30 June\, creating a dramatic and memorable spectacle for residents and visitors. \nBefore entering the harbour\, the vessel will pause offshore at Streedagh Beach\, honouring the site of the 1588 Spanish Armada sinkings and acknowledging Sligo’s deep historical connection to this story. \n \nSligo is home to the Remembering the Armada Festival\, and the group will launch their 2026 festival during the visit. \nVisitors will be able to step on board for a self guided tour\, exploring the decks\, cabins and maritime heritage of this spectacular ship. \nThe experience is suitable for all ages and is will be a major draw for families\, community groups\, maritime enthusiasts and cultural visitors. \nThis visit is hosted and supported by Sligo County Council\, with additional support from the Sligo Tourist Development Association (STDA) and Fáilte Ireland. \nCathaoirleach of Sligo County Council\, Cllr Donal Gilroy welcomed the news of the visit saying “As both Cathaoirleach and a long standing member of the Grange and Armada Development Association I am delighted to welcome the Galeón Andalucía to Sligo. The idea behind this event is to make classical music accessible for all\, by means of an informal concert with a relaxed atmosphere in a cafe-style setting. Musicians perform classical works in addition to a non-classical section – often folk\, traditional or jazz. \nCome along\, have a cup of tea or coffee and some delicious food\, to enjoy quality music in a relaxed atmosphere\, the ideal way to spend a Sunday afternoon! The concerts starts at 1pm\, but we recommend coming at 12.30pm.

DESCRIPTION:Jack Butler Yeats; The Living Ginger\nFri. 6 Mar. – Sun. 27 Sep. 2026\nPlease note\, that the exhibition The Living Ginger will be temporarily closed on Friday morning\, 22nd May\, until 2.30pm.\nJack B. Yeats used the phrase “the living ginger” to describe the vital spark he believed a great painting must contain — an inner charge that animates the image beyond mere description. For Yeats\, this energy was not simply visual; it was emotional\, psychological and imaginative. It was the pulse of lived experience. \nAcross a career spanning more than seventy years\, Yeats sought out figures who embodied this vitality. Performers\, sailors\, children at play and solitary figures — characters drawn from memory and from his early life in Sligo — recur throughout his work. Rarely settled within social settings\, they often stand alone\, absorbed in their own worlds\, heightening a sense of introspection and distance. \nYeats worked primarily in watercolour between 1898 and 1910 before turning decisively to oils. Many of his central concerns first take shape during this formative period and re-emerge with renewed intensity in the later paintings. The solitary figure emerges early as a powerful device\, a means of concentrating feeling and staging inner drama. Even at this stage\, themes of displacement and heightened atmosphere are evident. A clear continuity runs between these early works and the celebrated late oils of the 1940s and 1950s. Yeats repeatedly revisited the imagery of his youth\, allowing memory to reshape and intensify earlier motifs. Simple figures reappear decades later\, transformed by colour and gesture. Their energy ignites the surface of the canvas\, while their vulnerability opens onto something universal. \nIn these characters\, Yeats was not documenting social types.
