SUMMARY:Gatehouse
DESCRIPTION:Gatehouse bring their fantastic show to the Coleman Music Centre in Gurteen on Saturday 8th June with the concert starting at 8pm. \n“The term supergroup is perhaps over-used in some contexts\, but there’s no doubting the pedigree of the Gatehouse line-up.” Irish Music Magazine \nGatehouse are an Irish traditional band. The four members are Rachel Garvey (Vocals)\, Jacinta McEvoy (guitar and concertina)\, John McEvoy (fiddle and mandolin) and John Wynne (flute and whistles). \nSince getting together the band have gained a reputation for their tasteful interpretation of traditional songs and vibrant instrumentals\, combining “masterful technical proficiency” with “vocal numbers where the sparkle glows”.  The band have toured extensively\, drawing audiences into their world of infectious rhythms and soothing vocals. Their subtle instrumental interplay\, innovative accompaniment and enchanting vocals refreshes the ear and provides a unique insight into the roots of their tradition.  “Gatehouse is obviously steeped in tradition but also very cognisant of stylistic innovations” Boston Irish. \nTheir first album\, Tús Nua\, described as “an unerring delight” received a five-star review and was short-listed for The Irish Times 2016 album of the year. Their second release\, Heather Down The Moor (2019)\, showcases the band’s interpretative skills through subtle embellishment of classic folk songs and their ability to seamlessly blend the old with the new. \nLooking ahead\, the band continues to explore their rich musical heritage and to further establish their reputation for tasteful interpretation of songs and rollicking tunes. \n“an undeniable warmth and spirit that’s impossible to resist. …If they are not on your radar\, then they should be”. Folk Radio \nTickets are €15 and can be booked by calling the Coleman Music Centre on 071 918 2599 or via their website here.

SUMMARY:Late Nights at The Model presents Dónal Dineen’s Backstory
DESCRIPTION:The Model is delighted to welcome Dónal once more to a thrilling Late Nights gig as part of the after-party for the opening of The Sligo Wave. He returns to The Model with an acclaimed run on the RTE Lyric FM show Vespertine under his belt and wind in his sails! Dónal’s extended Backstory sets are like alternative guides to the musical universe with no stone left unturned in his mission to unearth gems from every musical hotspot the world over. \nWith special guest Hewan Mulugeta. \nDónal Dineen’s Backstory Dances have gone from strength to strength recently with a storied residency at the Commercial Rowing Club in Dublin continuing to hold down an exalted position within the capital’s underground dance scene. \nAs well as that\, a series of acclaimed stages curated by him at Irish festivals including The Cambium at All Together Now made 2023 another year to remember for both him and Backstory. \nThe impetus to start the night back in 2015 stemmed from his desire to find a home for the kind of dance music fire that he was unearthing in his search for tunes in dusty basements of record stores worldwide to write about for his Sunken Treasure column in the Irish Times.\nIt began as a project to gather together all the sounds he was collecting on vinyl from every part of the world and became a place for the like-minded to revel in the joy of music and the uniquely special experience of discovering it together on a dance-floor. The unerring attention to detail on the quality of the music has seen its reputation soar to become something of a touchstone for discerning dancers both in Dublin town and further afield.

SUMMARY:The Sligo Wave Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:The Sligo Wave \nTinka Bechert / Daniel Chester / Patrick Collins / Barrie Cooke / Patricia Doherty / Patrick Hall / Ronnie Hughes / Hazel McCrann / Seán McSweeney / Nick Miller / Cormac O’Leary / Andy Parsons / Emma Stroude / Cléa van der Grijn / Lorna Watkins / Jack Butler Yeats \n‘There is no alphabets\, no grammar\, no rules whatever’ \nJack Butler Yeats \nThe Sligo Wave provides an opportunity for audiences to explore Sligo’s place in the development of painting in Ireland. For over a hundred years\, the county has attracted many different generations of artists to find inspiration in the ever-changing light along its rugged Atlantic coastline. This show features work that demonstrates this strong association with the medium – from the iconic painter Jack Butler Yeats\, who won the silver medal for painting at the Paris Olympics in 1924 – to successive generations of artists connected to Sligo from the mid-twentieth century onwards. \nWhile the artists represented in The Sligo Wave approach painting in myriad ways\, they all have the ability to meld pigment into beautiful fields of cobalt\, jade\, crimson or tangerine\, to offer us images that hum with an essential energy. In many of these paintings we feel a deep connection to the North-western landscape. Mountains meet the sea in dramatic form. Bog pools\, foggy marshes\, stars and sunlight create ethereal visions\, and animals take on charged\, new mystical meanings. \nThe themes expressed encompass the physicality\, spirituality\, fragility\, and temporality at the heart of the human condition\, articulating on canvas ancient knowledge and emotions that go beyond words. The dynamic processes that underpin these paintings find their way to the viewer in playful and unexpected ways\, through abstract and figurative representation\, and states of being are expressed through form\, light and colour. \nYou are invited to contemplate these exciting gestures\, from that of an electric elk\, a rising swan\, and a human kiss; to a winter dawn\, a cluster of stars\, or a sudden godbeam of light. \nOn the occasion of this exhibition\, author Brian Leyden has written a poetic response to what it means to live and work as an artist in Sligo\, which can be read in the galleries. The exhibition continues until 7 September. \nThe Sligo Wave is funded by Creative Ireland.

SUMMARY:Strandhill Surf Folk Photo Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:The National Surf Centre\, Strandhill is pleased to present ‘Strandhill Surf Folk’ by local Sligo photographer Mark Capilitan\, from May 29th to June 28th this year. \nA Sligo native\, now based in Strandhill\, Mark began his photography career in the UK photographing Formula 1 and other motorsports\, before moving back to Sligo to set up his own business\, focusing primarily on wedding photography\, which he has done since 2007. \nStrandhill Surf Folk is very much a personal photographic project that Mark worked on for over a year. What started out as a way to photograph some of the people he surfs with\, the\nidea quickly spiraled into capturing the some of the historic Strandhill characters that started surfing here in the 1960s helping to put Strandhill on the surfing map for lots of international people who now call Sligo home and are included in this exhibition. \nMark says the more people he photographed\, the more some were saying “you should get this guy or this guy”. From there it took on a life of its own to what you’ll see at the exhibition\, which is 85 portraits ranging from the very first Strandhill surfers to the grom surf kids and everyone in between including whole families that surf. \nStrandhill Surf Folk exhibition is supported by The Strand Bar\, Shells Cafe\, Voya\, Mammy Johnston’s\, Stoked and The Wetsuit Company\, in association with the National Surf Centre. \nFollowing completion of the exhibition\, prints will be offered for sale for a nominal fee with 100% of proceeds going towards RNLI Sligo Bay Lifeboat Station.
