SUMMARY:Marianne Keating public conversation with Miguel Amado: Áilleacht Uafásach / A Terrible Beauty
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition opens on Sat. 16 March. To mark the occasion\, The Model is delighted to present a public conversation between Marianne Keating and Miguel Amado at 4pm\, followed by a drinks reception at 5pm. \n2pm   |  Galleries Opening\n4pm   |  Marianne Keating in Conversation with Miguel Amado\n5pm   |  Drinks Reception \n\n\n\nThis solo exhibition by the London-based\, Irish artist Marianne Keating\, brings together new and recent film-works that explore overlaps\, similarities and divergences between Irish and Caribbean colonial experiences. Keating’s practice-based research addresses the complex\, often overlooked histories of the Irish diaspora in the Caribbean through their archival residues; and lays bare the enduring legacies of British imperialism. \nAs part of this exhibition\, The Model will present the Irish première of a new film by Keating entitled An Ciúnas / The Silence\, 2023\, a three-channel film installation that traces multiple trajectories of migration from Ireland to both Jamaica and Britain\, from before the Great Famine of 1845-52 and up to the present day. The film considers the complex intersecting impact of that process on contemporary Jamaican politics\, and the relationship between Ireland and England since Irish independence. An Ciúnas / The Silence\, which was initially presented by The Showroom in London in 2023\, re-examines these narratives through the lens of Irish and Jamaican anti-colonial ties. \nÁilleacht Uafásach / A Terrible Beauty will feature two other recent film works by Keating\, including A Beautiful Dream\, 2020-2022\, which explores the way in which Ireland’s fight for self-determination mirrored similar movements in other colonies of the British Empire\, and gained the support of Marcus Garvey and the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA). Also on view will be Landlessness\, 2017-2022\, a two-channel film that analyses the migration of Irish Indentured Labourers during the period 1835-1842\, tracing their recruitment in Ireland to their final destination on the plantation of Freeman’s Hall Estate\, in Jamaica. \nThese films will be accompanied by a number of other artworks by Keating\, as well as archival material that excavates threads of both the Jamaican and Irish colonial experiences. Including the 2011 film Bad Friday: Rastafari After Coral Gardens\, by Deborah A. Thomas and John L. Jackson\, Jr. that explores the history of violence against Rastafari under the new Independent Jamaican Government led by Prime Minister Alexander Bustamante. \nMarianne Keating is an Irish artist and researcher\, based in London. She has a practice-based PhD in Visual & Material Culture and Contemporary Art Practice from Kingston University London\, entitled\, ‘They don’t do much in the cane-hole way’\, Hidden Histories of the Irish Diaspora in Jamaica. Keating has exhibited extensively\, with presentations at The Showroom\, London; the Whitechapel Gallery\, London; Crawford Art Gallery; RAMPA\, Portugal; South London Gallery; Barbados Museum and Historical Society\, amongst many other galleries and museums. \nAn Ciúnas / The Silence was initially presented by The Showroom\, London\, in 2023-24. The Irish tour of the work is initiated and organised by SIRIUS\, Cobh\, County Cork. The production of An Ciúnas / The Silence and its Irish tour are supported by The Arts Council.

SUMMARY:Luka Bloom
DESCRIPTION:In 1972 Barry Moore wrote a song called ‘Wave Up To The Shore’. Not his first song\, but it had something. A dynamic Irish singer/songwriter whose music is defined by passion\, lyricism\, and a respect for tradition coupled with a willingness to defy expectations\, was already a seasoned veteran of the folk scenes in Europe and the British Isles when he reinvented himself as Luka Bloom in 1987.\n As a solo acoustic act with a big voice and intense guitar style he managed to channel the energy and power of rock into albums like The Acoustic Motorbike (1992)\, Turf (1994) and Between the Mountain and the Moon (2002)\, rising to international acclaim and becoming one of Ireland’s best-respected contemporary folk artists. \n Prolific in the studio and even more so on the stage\, Bloom’s career became that of the seemingly tireless D.I.Y. troubadour whose unpredictable varied musical repertoire has included eclectic cover albums\, socio-political anthems\, world music fusions\, and heartfelt organic folk. After starting his own label\, he maintained a steady stream of studio and live albums like The Man Is Alive (2008) and 2014’s jazz-folk standout Head & Heart\, and also published the memoir Homeplace. Amid his varied catalogue are also a number of interesting diversions including a 2018 guided meditation album.

SUMMARY:Looking Forward\, Looking Back Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Looking Forward\, Looking Back presents an opportunity for visitors to explore new acquisitions\, alongside some much loved favourites\, from Sligo Municipal Art Collection. \nThe Niland Collection was founded by former Sligo County Librarian Nora Niland in 1960\, and was carefully cultivated by Niland from then until her retirement in 1979. SUMMARY:The Felice Brothers
DESCRIPTION:The Felice Brothers first emerged from the Hudson Valley nearly two decades ago with a gloriously ramshackle sound that drew on everything from Woody Guthrie and Bob Dylan to Walt Whitman and Flannery O’Connor. In just a few short years\, the group went from busking in the subway to playing Radio City Music Hall with Bright Eyes and appearing everywhere from the Newport Folk Festival to Levon Helm’s Midnight Ramble.\n Beginning with 2007’s Tonight At The Arizona\, the band helped pave the way for the modern folk revival\, while at the same time challenging its boundaries and conventions with bold sonic experimentation and unyielding integrity. The New York Times likened their music to “the rootsy mysticism of the Band\,” while Rolling Stone praised the “scrappiness” of their “folk-rock noir\,” and The Guardian hailed their songs as “impeccably crafted\, with literary-minded lyrics that are both playful and profound.” \n The band’s newest record\, Valley of Abandoned Songs\, marks The Felice Brothers’ debut for Conor Oberst’s new Million Stars label and showcases the group at their most intimate and unvarnished. Balancing hope and despair in equal measure\, the album explores the search for meaning and connection through the eyes of a wide-ranging cast of misfits and outcasts\, and though the recordings here span several years of almost-lost tunes\, the result is a thoroughly cohesive collection that manages to feel both utterly timeless and particularly attuned to the present all at once.
