Sligo’s Public Realm Plan has been shortlisted for a National Planning Award by the Irish Planning Institute (IPI).
Sligo County Council commissioned design consultants Building Design Partnership to prepare a Public Realm Plan for Sligo City in 2018. The aim of the Plan was to propose improvements to Sligo’s public spaces, including streets and car parks and to enhance the city as an attractive place in which to live, work and visit.
The Public Realm Plan identified a number of key locations within the urban area where there are significant opportunities to create high quality people friendly spaces.
The IPI received 56 entries across 7 categories for the Awards. The Institute were extremely impressed with the calibre of applications this year and selected projects of particular merit for short listing. The Sligo Public Realm Plan was shortlisted in the Design Category.
Preparing the Plan is the first step in the rejuvenation of Sligo and marks a new era of heightened awareness of the importance of good quality design in our public spaces and streets.
Implementation of the Plan is a priority for Sligo County Council and will take place incrementally (as resources permit) over the next few years.
