Extended to June 3rd – SLNCR Greenway Public Consultation for Phase 3

View of Sligo where potential greenway could be developed.

SLNCR GREENWAY WANTS TO HEAR VIEWS OF SLIGO, LEITRIM, FERMANAGH & CAVAN

LOCAL communities, landowners and stakeholders are to be given more time to share their views on proposals for the Sligo Leitrim and Northern Counties (SLNCR) Greenway.

The deadline for submissions has been extended to Tuesday 3 June 2025 with all information available on the website www.slncr-greenway.com
The extension of time follows successful in-person events held in Sligo, Dromahair and Belcoo during May where more than 175 people attended.

The 75km greenway will honour the old railway line as a safe space for local and visiting walkers and cyclists. It will be a strategic and scenic route for people to come, stay, visit and explore the region. The publication of the Emerging Preferred Corridor marks public consultation no 3 for the project.

Brendan McKenna from Leitrim County Council, Senior Executive Engineer to the project said:

‘The emerging preferred corridor has now been published for the greenway. It sets out the area where the preferred route is likely to be. It is important we hear from local communities and landowners as their insight is invaluable to help inform the design.

‘Last week we had important and engaging conversations. Local people told us about their land and communities – the history, stories and even folklore. We heard everything from farm operations, contours of the land, recreational use, how people live in their homes, link with neighbours and movement of water, wildlife and traffic.
‘We ask everyone to share their views with us via the website or with the project liaison officers out on the ground before 3 June.’

Phase 3 focuses on identifying a preferred route corridor between Collooney in County Sligo and Enniskillen in County Fermanagh — and your input is essential.

Go directly to https://slncr-greenway.com/public-consultation-no-3/ for more details.

The SLNCR (Sligo, Leitrim and Northern Counties Railway) Greenway is a proposed 75km walking and cycling route that will repurpose the disused SLNCR railway corridor into a scenic, accessible, and sustainable trail. Spanning from Sligo Town to Enniskillen, the Greenway promises to boost tourism, connect communities, and offer a valuable outdoor amenity for all.

The consultation relates to the entire route. Several potential route corridors are now being considered that would bring the Greenway through beautiful areas such as Collooney, Ballintogher, Ballygawley, and other communities in eastern Sligo. The consultation maps and materials are available online and at local information events, and feedback from residents, businesses, landowners, and other stakeholders will help shape the final route.

This is a unique opportunity to influence a transformative project for the northwest region. Whether you’re a cyclist, walker, local resident, or visitor, your perspective matters.

Let’s help bring the SLNCR Greenway one step closer to reality.

The Sligo, Leitrim, Northern Counties Railway (SLNCR) Greenway is being developed by Leitrim County Council, in partnership with Sligo County Council, Cavan County Council, Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, under the auspices of Transport infrastructure Ireland (TII) and the Department for Infrastructure (DfI)
