Invest – Foreign Direct Investment in Sligo

Foreign Direct Investment in Sligo:

A Gateway to Growth in the North West

Sligo, and the wider North West, is increasingly becoming a magnet for Foreign Direct Investment (FDI). With its strategic location, skilled workforce, and supportive infrastructure, the county offers a compelling value proposition for global companies seeking to expand in Europe. At the heart of this transformation is IDA Ireland, the national agency tasked with attracting and supporting foreign investment.

IDA Ireland: Championing Regional Development

IDA Ireland’s commitment to regional growth is evident in its latest strategy, Adapt Intelligently: A Strategy for Sustainable Growth and Innovation 2025–2029, which sets a target of 1,000 new investments, with 550 earmarked for regional locations outside Dublin. This builds on the success of the previous strategy (2021–2024), during which 973 investments were secured, 54% of which went to regional areas.

In 2024 alone, 59% of IDA-supported investments were outside Dublin, with the West region – which includes Sligo -securing 24 investments. The wider region also hosts 130 IDA client companies, supporting over 31,000 direct jobs, and contributing significantly to the local economy through payroll, services, and R&D (Research & Development).

Recent FDI Performance and Trends

The first half of 2025 saw a surge in FDI activity across Ireland, with 179 investments secured—a 37% increase compared to the same period in 2024. Of these, 91 investments (51%) were in regional locations, reflecting IDA’s strategic focus on balanced development.

Key highlights from the IDA 2025 mid-year report include:
• 10,003 new jobs pledged by IDA client companies
• 52 first-time investments into Ireland
• 43 R&D-focused projects
• 34 sustainability and green capital investments

These figures underscore Ireland’s growing reputation as a hub for innovation, sustainability, and talent development.

Sligo’s Infrastructure and Sectoral Strengths

Sligo’s attractiveness to investors is bolstered by infrastructure upgrades such as the Western Distributor Road, which improves access to the IDA Business Park at Oakfield, and enhancements to the N4 route connecting Sligo to Dublin. These developments make Sligo a viable location for high-tech and life sciences companies.

The region has already seen success stories like Bed Bath & Beyond, Inc. Sligo (formerly Overstock.com), which expanded its European Development Centre in Sligo, creating 100 new R&D roles. Nearby counties have also benefited, with Abbott investing in Donegal and Freudenberg Medical creating 250 jobs in Leitrim, further strengthening the North West’s life sciences cluster.

Economic Impact and Future Outlook

According to the Annual Business Survey of Economic Impact (ABSEI), the Border region contributed almost €1.3 billion in direct expenditure to the Irish economy in 2023, including €662 million in payroll and €63 million in in-house R&D (See Written Answers). These figures highlight the substantial economic footprint of FDI in the region.

Looking ahead, IDA Ireland’s strategy identifies four growth drivers – AI & Digitalisation, Semiconductors, Sustainability, and Health – which align well with Sligo’s strengths and potential. With continued government support and a strong pipeline of investments, Sligo is poised to play a pivotal role in Ireland’s FDI future.
