Matt Jones designs beautiful handmade wooden items for home. He only uses ethically sourced Irish wood such as fallen beech, walnut, ash and oak trees to make his collection of handmade salad bowls, salt mills, pepper grinders, commissioned items and sculptural art pieces.

He works from his workshop which is based in County Sligo surrounded by hills, woods and the wild Atlantic sea. This dramatic landscape plays a major part in my work.

He studied painting at Chelsea College of Art, London. In 2005 he moved to Riverstown Village with his wife Imelda and their children to renovate a former outbuilding into the family home.

A workshop soon followed and he began my wood turning journey through a self-taught apprenticeship. In 2009 he started turning full-time and his business has evolved into a family run enterprise.

His art school trained artistic eye brings a unique approach to the craft of wood turning. His handmade wooden giftware and tableware products are both functional whilst at the same time being aesthetically pleasing art pieces in their own right.

About Riverstown

Riverstown is a gorgeous little village in the heart of South Sligo and is home to the fabulous Sligo Folk Park. The village has a long and proud history with Irish traditional music and every year the James Morrison festival draws music enthusiasts from around the world. Coopershill Estate is in the village and is an amazing place for corporate retreats and family get togethers – you can hire the whole place.

This is an ideal spot to stop in if you are driving to Sligo from Dublin – particularly if you have young children in the car. Pull off the main road and let them enjoy the outdoor playground and get a tasty treat in the cafe in the Folk Park!

The place name in Irish is Baile idir dhá Abhainn, meaning ‘town between two rivers’.
